There's a funk thread already, Sven. However, based on my important research you have two or three options:

1. Old Funk Bands.  They each have the major one or two big funk hits, the rest of the full LPs tend to be filler and love ballads. I was very saddened by this.  The 70s disco records were more consistant than these slightly older ones.

2. Deep Funk Revival Bands. There are one million and they are more like we want - traditional bumping Funk tunes. They do not have the big Funk hits we want, but the albums are much better with no filler and no boring love ballads.  I like these bands a lot - budos band, The new mastersounds etc.   Because they keep the party going through the whole record it can get a bit weary on the ears, so keep it on random.

3. Funk Greatest Hits Collections
There are 100s and they are all great. This is the best way to go.  That Memphix Chains Night one or whatever it's called is a winner. You really can't get a bad one from very obscure to the Breaks records to the big collections of big hits.

^yup^

also;
Long time StonerRocker/Funkster/Jazzbo/D.J./AllAroundMusicGuru L Ron may weigh in here. Between he and MadJohnShaft you will find a wealth of knowledge on this subject.

Isaac Hayes' Group from the early 70's sounds alot like early Funkadelic. Especially Michael Toles' lead guitars....

Also look for Demon Fuzz..a good funk band on the heavy side.

Bernie Worrell stays with my buddy's brother when he's in town.  Sleepy little suburban of Portland.  I've never met him but John says he's uber chill and super cool.  they just hang out and jam and usually play a couple shows.  I missed the last one just about a month ago.

Probably on those old lists but just in case -

The Bar-Kays (after the plane crash, before the disco stuff)
The Temptations (psychedelic era produced by Norman Whitfield, some of the best music you'll ever hear in your life)
Ohio Players (especially the Westbound tapes)
Kool & the Gang (early tapes on De-Lite)
Isley Brothers (Live It Up, Fight The Power, anything that has a massive Ernie Isley fuzzed out guitar solo)

Woody pretty much nailed it along with the Undisputed Truth(whom I've been meaning to look into deeper for a while now but haven't gotten around to it yet) shout-out from Metal Assult and Godshifter.  I would also add the first two Earth Wind and Fire records, the two Ruth Copeland solo records(backed by members of Parliament/Funkadelic), the first two Dennis Coffey records and from more of the Rock side of things, Rare Earth.  I will also have to say that while a lot of great music was created while attempting it, no other group(s) really came close to being as successful at achieving a seamless integration of soul/funk and rock as Parliament(Osmium-era)/Funkadelic imo, they are in a class by themselves as far as it goes.

Undisputed Truth! How could I forget them? Another outfit produced by Norman Whitfield. Their records are fuckin trippy! A lot of times if the Temptations didn't have a hit with a song he'd re-arrange it for Undisputed Truth.

     I don't know, but here's an interesting 70's Funk-related pic:

Priest!  Kiss

I'll recommend some older stuff too. Check out some of Don Pullen's jams...
