The Shocker

Drag Me To Hell was trashy fun.

I've got a policy in that I never watch a movie with Julia Roberts in it.  It hasn't let me down yet.

Much better than I thought it would be. Sorta cheesy, but good.

I just revisited MARS ATTACKS!

All the stuff with the Martians is awesome & everything else sucks ass.

I Melt With You's on a lot of worst of the year lists.  How is Sasha Gray is in it, how is she?

I did the same thing a couple of months ago with Mars Attacks.  Just a miss, IMO.

I have the trading cards (which are fucking awesome) so I was looking forward to the Burton movie.

Netflix doesn't even carry "A Serbian Film"?
Rock & Roll is background music for teenagers to fuck to.

I bought it.  I read that Netflix will never carry it.

The Shocker

First of all this is an exploitation movie, with a little bit of artistic flair.  I don't buy that it's an allegory for something else. As for being disturbing, well I could see if you don't watch a lot of exploitation movies that it would be, but for this jaded viewer it wasn't that bad.  A little too unrealistic to be truly disturbing - I actually felt Hostel 1 & 2 were more disturbing because I cared somewhat for some of the characters.  This one I just felt detached.

Most disturbing movies off the top of my head:

1. Testament (also the saddest movie I've ever seen).
2. Henry: Portrait Of A Serial Killer
3. Texas Chainsaw Massacre
4. Wolf Creek
5. Hostel 1 & 2

A Serbian Film would be below those.

I was actually a little bored during some of it.  Some super hot chicks though.

GodShifter

Awesome, thanks for sharing, bro.

I respect your opinion so I guess I'll skip that one. "Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer" is an all-time favorite of mine. Looks like I need to check out "Testament" and "Wolf Creek" because I've never heard of either of those.

Jor el

I've never seen "Henry", and I'm not sure why.

Hey, just so you know - Testament is not a horror movie even though it is terrifying.  Wolf Creek got lumped in with Torture Porn craze of a few years ago, but I think there is a little more going on in it.

Honestly I don't remember seeing her much if at all.  It gets weird when the chicks arrive.  I think it is worth checking out, just don't expect brilliance.

I'm not so much into torture porn, really, bro. What I do like, though, are movies that really push the boundaries in terms of comfort - whether that be psychological, sexual, atmosphere, violence, etc. Like, for instance, I like a lot of Miike's stuff because it's just so off the beaten path and weird or Todd Solondz's stuff - I like him a lot. So, with that said, I'll definitely check out "Testament". I think, though, I'll read up on it a little bit.

P.S. What was that Nazi movie you saw sometime back that was set in Russia or something? That sounded very interesting to me, too.

The Shocker

I don't think Wolf Creek is torture porn, it just got lumped in with it.  It builds up the characters well and also toys with the "final girl" stereotype.  Plus Roger Ebert gave it 0 stars, which I find amusing.  It's like he totally did not get it.

The Sauna? or something else?

Edit:  Come and See?  I think that was the title of the Russian movie.

Ive heard that the original 'A Serbian Film' is not being sold, rather an edited version? It was bad enough with even 30 minutes removed to garner an 'unrated'. I've seen the uncut/banned version.

Not trying to downplay your assessment of it, just wondering if youre seeing the original version, because the list you have (and putting it at the bottom of those) is making me wonder

Run time of the original is 104 mins. The one for sale in most vid stores/online is 99 mins, and I know what scenes are removed. There is another one for sale with a run time of 103 minutes and that has one quick scene removed.

The Shocker

The version I have is 103 minutes.  I think there were a few edits, but my version is definitely unrated.

I think for a movie to be disturbing I have to be invested in it somewhat or that it needs to be realistic.  When I don't care about any of the characters it is tough to be disturbed by it.  I also have to admit I'm pretty desensitized by this point.  Hell, watching terrorists execute people and Iraqi sniper footage is way worse than A Serbian Film.

EaterofBirds

Sauna is good but hardly anything controversial, though has some themes and a couple of intense scenes, its nothing on par with the film being discussed. Its Finnish, not Russian for what it's worth. Maybe Frontiers? but that was Russina either..

I though Human Centipede 2 was vile, and almost unwatchable but at least Serbian Film had some plot. If thats what you call it.

The Shocker

I agree, I wasn't trying to say Sauna was that intense, just trying to remember what movie Godshifter was asking about.  Sauna was more of a WTF movie to me.

Frontiers was ok.

Now that I've thought about it, Martyrs would be on my list of disturbing movies.

Haven't seen Human Centipede 2.  I thought the first one was pretty lame.

GodShifter

Dude, I couldn't stomach "Martyrs". That movie was too ... too something for me. Just made me feel bleak and awful at the end of it. Not my idea of a good time with that one.

What about "I Stand Alone"? I heard that one is pretty rough, too? Anyone seen it?

I saw it, thought it sucked. Primarily because it was boring.  Irreversible was much better and also really disturbing.

GodShifter

"Irreversible" is the same director, no? Isn't that the one where the dude beats the guy's face in with a fire extinguisher?

Still processing this one - a very tough watch.

This was it.

Funny, I remember it being a tough watch, but it really didn't stick with me.  So few do - I think that's why the ones I've listed as being disturbing stuck with me.  Something in them struck a nerve or something.
