Write-up of the Locrian - Blacklist - Martial Canterel - Gnaw show at Europa on Sunday.

http://www.villagevoice.com/2011-04-06/voice-choices/sludge-match/ (http://www.villagevoice.com/2011-04-06/voice-choices/sludge-match/)

I'm curious to see Locrian. Martial Canterel sounds like early 80s post-industrial bleak/minimal/British dance club music... Completely nails the period details. Not my exact cup of tea, but they do it well.

DARSOMBRA (Brian from Meatjack) with Creeplings, Millions, and Peopling
Friday August 10th
9pm
$6
La Sala
58 n 3rd st.
brooklyn ny 11211

Darsombra
(Baltimore)
http://darsombra.com/

If we can invent the term "transcendental rock", then let's apply it to Darsombra, Brian Daniloski and Ann Everton's audiovisual music project. Daniloski, a veteran of heavier, sludgier, grittier rock bands such as Meatjack and Trephine, controls the sound of Darsombra, alternating between mammoth vocal swells and soundscapes and searing guitar riffs, leads, loops, and samples. Take one part metal, one part psychedelic rock, one part experimental, and a dash of prog and krautrock, and you begin to have an idea why Darsombra, as music, needs its own genre. But there is more than just Daniloski's sonic world at play here--video artist Everton takes his work to the next level by bringing her Darsombra-induced visions to the stage through her kinetic psychotropic video projections, creating an constantly shifting backdrop to Daniloski's live performances.

Creeplings
(NYC)
http://soundcloud.com/creeplings
http://www.vimeo.com/22900122

Heavy rhythmic ambient/industrial music from Bianca Bibiloni (Ala Muerte) and Joshua Slusher (OPPONENTS). New albums coming this year from Fortissimo Records and Prison Tatt Records.

Millions
(NYC)
http://soundcloud.com/

David Suss has tuned his project Millions into a truly cosmic channel since 2006, sculpting a brilliant body of work across labels like Tape Drift, Blackest Rainbow, Peasant Magik, and 2:00AM Tapes.

Peopling

I saw Darsombra a few years ago at the Cake Shop- it was a pretty cool "show". You have to pay attention to enjoy it, because there are no real songs, but he pulls off some pretty amazing build-ups and whatnot. I would imagine it would be a neat thing to see if you were on drugs. To do that thing live, he's obviously very talented.

The Charleston had some great shows over the years, but it used to drive me nuts that they had no online listings. I mean, how freakin' hard is it to update a webpage? Their last Myspace update was Oct '09.

That's a tough night because right up the street at Zebulon is the trio of Mick Barr (Krallice) Tim Dahl (Child Abuse) and Kevin Shea (Talibam) plus Weasel Walter's Cellular Chaos. Those events are within walking distance though, hmm.

Also, Public Assembly is closing in two weeks. It was sold and will change with new ownership. Front room is already demolished, and will reopen as "a bar" (zzzzzzz). Back room will probably remain as a music space, it's not certain though. Not sure how long the changeover will take, or what kind of music they will book.

Seriously, srlives is embarrassing when it comes to live shows. Does like only 2% of the board go to shows? Sheesh.
Anyway, this Friday, 10/10, The Brought Low and Battle for Wyoming are playing at Hanks. There are some other bands I don't know.

If you like the heavy and don't know Battle for Wyoming, you are in for a treat. Walls will shake and ears will bleed.

I've never seen them, only heard a couple songs. But I like Accept Death (shared some members I think).

Probably not going to Goatsnake tomorrow, can't get my shit together. :(

Maybe not Acid King either. :(  :(

I have a ticket for Bongzilla.

How's this for a diverse bill...

You could conceivably have 4 different crowds for this show, based on how each band sounds. I'll be there for all 4, though.

Although the Rough Trade show was awesome, I liked the Mercury Lounge set better. I can't exactly say why.
It was fun seeing people who had never seen Earthless before have their heads explode. I noticed it on both nights from people standing near me.

Is that your band?

There's some cool shows at Pioneer Works (in Red Hook) this Summer: SLEEP (two nights), The Body w/ Author & Punisher, Lightning Bolt, and Fushitsusha (noisy Japanese psych), a few more that I'm forgetting maybe. It's a decent space, not super convenient (about 20 minute walk from the train), the sound is usually good although I've never seen a super heavy band there before.
