Ya Joe Abercrombie is great its definitely a unique and more gritty version of fantasy.  The hyperviolence makes for a great read as well.

Underworld USA Trilogy by James Ellroy. So dark and cynic. Totally fantastic!

And the Song of fire and ice. It's ridiculously good. I have two more to read before the wait...
