And when we're talking Sabbath albums, I mean REAL Sabbath. Ozzy, Tony, Bill and Geezer.

8 albums covering just as many years, and a legacy of musical and lyrical genius that continues to inspire punters & musicians alike down to this very day. But YOU only get to choose ONE.

S/T Black Sabbath (1970)
Paranoid (1970)
Master of Reality (1971)
Black Sabbath Vol. 4 (1972)
Sabbath Bloody Sabbath (1973)
Sabotage (1975)
Technical Ecstasy (1976)
Never Say Die! (1978)

Sabbath Bloody Sabbath to me is the pinnacle of their abilities.  Perfect album in my opinion.

Great beyond comprehension:
S/T Black Sabbath (1970)
Black Sabbath Vol. 4 (1972)

Just a little less great:
Paranoid (1970)
Master of Reality (1971)

Slipping, but still strong:
Sabbath Bloody Sabbath (1973)
Sabotage (1975)

This is Black Sabbath ?
Never Say Die! (1978)
Technical Ecstasy (1976)

I found a cassette of Paranoid when I was about 15. I put it on at this guy's place where I found it, and it was as the start of Iron Man. Within 30 seconds the guy tells me to get that shit off.

It only took the very 1st opening of Tony's guitar note to synch into Bill's drums to hook me. Then Ozzy screaming "I am Iron Man" to seal the deal. I pocketed the tape.

And 26 years later, every single song off that album has in some way made me who I am today.

Yep, some old fucker posting crap on a shitty music forum... with other old fuckers posting the same crap.

And... loving it!!!

i don't know how to pick between the first three...they're each works of unprecedented genius.

vol. 4 is still phenomenal but you can definitely hear things start to change.  sabbath bloody sabbath - the shark has been jumped and would never be unjumped.

i don't know...i'll give them each a listen (the first three)  and come back and vote before christmas.

It is tough to decide, isn't it ?

For example, PARANOID is my 3rd fave; but it's an absolutely essential album for me because of 'Paranoid', 'War Pigs', and the immortal 'Fairies Wear Boots'.
I can still enjoy Iron Man, even after thousands (?) of hearings.

I like Rat Salad, Hand Of Doom, and Planet Caravan, but I'm a little tired of them.

I'm more tired of Electric Funeral.

(I hope this post doesn't mean MY funeral [at the hands of all you PARANOID fanatics out there])

I know everyone considers the first four the most pure sabbath albums but shark jumping or not sabbath bloody sabbath and sabotage contain some serious magic.  Just sayin.

Paranoid is the best - the best combination of catchy well-defined songs (War Pigs, Iron Man, Paranoid etc) with extended jamming (Hand of Doom, Fairies Wear Boots) and the slow 'breather' song (Planet Caravan) is better than the rest (Changes, Orchid, etc). There's no real weak spots, and loads of classics. It narrowly edges out the S/T and "Master of Reality" and is clearly ahead of "Sabbath Bloody Sabath" and "Sabotage". (Edit: "Volume 4" is pretty solid but largely lacks the strong hooks found on "Paranoid")

The #1 rock&roll song to jam in your cool Pontiac (etc) at super high volume is "Paranoid".

IMO.

I feel sad that the experimentation of the final 2 albums, coupled with in-house fighting issues, overshadows the fact that there's some killer riffage hidden between the layers, some real serious magic. Never Say Die's "Shock Wave" is a classic case in point. It has possibly the most infectious riff ever stashed away and not unleashed in full fury to last moments of the song. And the lyrics? Fuck.... some of the darkest stuff Geezer penned, just "lost" and overshadowed by a band who was losing their way, and a world not ready then, or even now, to embrace a new Sabbath sound era.

Damn shame. Just sayin.

I had an argument with a fellow Sabs fan last weekend and pulled out "Shock Wave". Awesome song, both of the last Ozzy Sabs albums get a bit overshadowed by the earlier stuff.

I have always rated Sabotage as number one but only just over Master Of Reality. I think musically they were at their peak around 75 especially if you listen to the live boots from that era. The band was on fire.

Easy...their first album is their best. Hands down. Sabotage and Vol. 4 are solid albums, as well. Paranoid doesn't really do much for me anymore, but that's probably got something to do with my dad playing the hell out of it ever since I was a little kid. Probably just burnt out on it.

"real" Sabbath or not I'd still put Heaven & Hell up there with any of the 1st five.

But anyway once you get to know Never Say Die it's really not that bad, I wish they would do a remaster where you get 1 disc with Ozzy's vocals and a 2nd disc with Dave Walker's vocals.  Like they did with the Eternal Idol where disc 1 is Tony Martin and disc 2 is Ray Gillen.

Though legend has it Walker's vocals were erased, a version of Juniors Eyes still exists with Walker's vocals, I have it on a comp called Archangel Rides Again.

The 1978 performance of 'Junior's Eyes' by Black Sabbath featuring Dave Walker on vocals from the BBC Midlands programme 'Look! Hear!' was screened on the 'Missing Believed Wiped' event at the National Film Theatre on London's South Bank. It was only the second time any footage has been screened from this performance in 32 years. I have been searching everywhere for a copy of this but haven't come across it as yet. The BBC has the version of War Pigs but that hasn't surfaced either.

Sweet picture there.  If I find any of those videos I'll let you know.

I'm just wondering if ANY of Walker's vocals survived, like reference mixes and so forth before they were wiped from the multitrack.

It's not even that I'm a huge Dave Walker fan, I just love to hear odd stuff like that.

The other Sabbath curiosity I'd like to hear one day are the versions of the Dehumanizer songs with Tony Martin singing.

The Dehumanizer songs with Tony Martin singing would be great to hear. Apart from what has been discussed here, the only other Sabbath rarity I want it a split with Status Quo. There was only 100 pressings made and never offically released but versions have turned up on E-Bay. Everytime I hear it is on there, I go there to find its been sold. I think it was made for Juke-boxes in 1972 with Children of the grave on one side and Status Quo's Roadhouse Blues on side 2.

I agree Shock Wave has some of the best lyrics Geezer ever came up with, very underrated song.

There's no reason for you to run
You can't escape the fate of the chosen one
Black moon rising, in a blood red sky
This time you realise that you're gonna die

Drinking your blood brew is your answer
That's what you plan to do
No dreaming, time you cheat this master
You're on your own going through

Wind of mist has taken over your mind
And you think you're on your own
Don't believe you are the only one here
Look around, you're not alone

Feel the forces from another world
Ghostly shadows fill your mind
Evil power hanging over you
As you freeze, you're like a child
Look behind you!

Somebody's calling
Someone is near
Feel yourself falling
Falling with fear
You tell yourself you're dreaming
You realise you're screaming
You know that this shouldn't happen to you
You tell yourself that it must not be true
But there is nothing you can do, oh!

Ghostly shadows from the other world
Evil forces in your mind
Trapped between the worlds of life and death
Frozen in the realms of time
Look behind you!

You feel yourself falling, you're at the end of the line
Your body is crawling, but your senses are blind
Cold, cold feelings are running through your brains
Ice cold fingers, running through your veins

drats i'm late for the poll, but gotta agree with the winner...their first album is the Best. nothing beats the guitar and drum tones on that one. Love Tony Iommi's fuzzed out, tripped out late 60's reverb tone. the first track is still one of the heaviest songs ever recorded.

too bad Ozzy sold out with that Justin Beeber crap tho. Sharon must be out of her mind. funny and i met Ozzy too.... i wish i met the psychedelic Ozzy from the 70's tho. damn that was a year ago since i met him. time sure flies.

i would have said Master of Reality but if only it had the same sound as the first, although 'Solitude' sounds like it could fit on the first album.

Sometimes I feel it's a tie between Master of Reality and the first one for me. 'Sweet Leaf' has to be one of my favorite songs ever. I can never get burnt out on that one. 'Iron Man' however just sucks. Sorry to say that but it's their corniest song imo.

EDIT- as much as Paranoid is played out.....if i'm in the right headspace i can still groove to it. 'Planet Caravan' is prolly the coolest song on that.

Iron Man is retarded, in the best possible way. Sweet Leaf a little bit retarded in a similar way, but not to the same degree that Iron Man is. Yeah, it's easy to get sick of Iron Man. Just leave it alone for a few years, but some day you'll come full circle. It rules. So basic, primitive and direct, with no extra shit that you don't absolutely need. Almost like pop music in it's basic construction.

'Sweet Leaf' retarded!?? no way! that song is epic, unless you don't smoke pot i can see why it would be,but still Sweet Leaf is beyond awesome. one of the BEST riffs ever created.not even played out like Iron Man. i covered that song once in my last band. fun riff to jam to..

anyways....so who are the posters who voted for Technical Ecstasy and Never Say Die?

Funny but for awhile i considered Technical Ecstasy to be the best Sabbath album and I'd even say it's wayyy better than Heaven and Hell (which is also a great album but it's not as good as TE). That was back in the late 90's when i was smoking ALOT of weed...still do lol but listening to TE the first time really high was really really awesome. favorite song is 'Dirty Women'....soo underated. That album is very heavy but in a different way. 'All Moving Parts(Stand STill)' sounds like a disco/Funk Metal song.... 'Gypsy' sounds like something Foreigner would do but way better.

then back in 2005 i met another chick who likes Technical Ecstasy too. that really surprised me as i thought I was the only girl on earth who liked that album....and my friend was a huge drug addict too lol. was into harder stuff tho.

Come to think, I feel it's a tie between TE and the first album for me.

You guys are just kidding around, right ?
About Technical Ecstasy being a great album & one of Sabbath's best, I mean.   :)

No, I'm not kidding.  I really dig this album.  Just because it's different from previous releases doesn't mean it sucks.  People really need to listen to it instead of wanting to hear what has been done previously.

Technical Ecstasy is a GREAT album......first time i heard that i was sober and i still liked it. the first time i heard that stoned however really blew my mind.

Never Say Die the same. something about those albums while under the influence is just so awesome.  the guitar solo in 'Junior's Eyes' is really heavy. Tony Iommi's best guitar solo imo. it's so full of emotion and just the way the band plays against it is excellent.

"Technical Ecstasy is a GREAT album......first time i heard that i was sober and i still liked it."

    Hee, hee. That's funny.

Maybe even sig worthy-
Not for me, though. I've got to have at least one of my Top Ten's (or top whatever #) posted.

OK, I'll give those albums another whirl.

For Sabbath, I'll go the extra mile.

Ah, but it was funny, Isabella.    :)

   Who's this Dio guy ?

As I've said over and over, on SRC and here,

     It's

  Black Sabbath
  Paranoid
  Master Of Reality
  Vol. IV

  Sabbath Bloddy Sabbath
  Sabotage

  For Me.

Great beyond comprehension:
Black Sabbath s/t (1970)
Black Sabbath Vol. 4 (1972)

Just a little less great:
Paranoid (1970)
Master of Reality (1971)

Slipping, but still strong:
Sabbath Bloody Sabbath (1973)
Sabotage (1975)

This is Black Sabbath ?
Never Say Die! (1978)
Technical Ecstasy (1976)

For me, Sabbath were at their best when they still had the loose, free-flowing, jammy feeling from their blues-rock days. I felt like they lost a lot of that when they started experimenting more with studio techniques. Their later albums have some great songs, but all of them are hampered by some really terrible ones, as well as some questionable production decisions.
Their self-titled is good, but very raw, and they hadn't quite developed their sound fully.
Master of Reality has their absolute best material ("Lord Of This World" and "Into The Void"), as well as the most crushing production job ever achieved, but it's just too short.
Volume 4 is the start of their downhill slide in my opinion. Two great songs ("Snowblind" and "Supernaut"), a bunch of forgettable ones, and some of the worst shit ever ("Changes," "FX"). That trend continued through the rest of the Ozzy albums, sadly.
Thus, the best Black Sabbath album is Paranoid. It preserves the effortless blues flow of their early stuff while massively improving the production, and features most of their best songs, as well as quite possibly the finest collection of riffs ever put to tape. "Paranoid" is probably the only weak track on the whole album, and if "Iron Man" wasn't so over-played, more folks would recognize how brilliant it is.
Just watch this if you don't believe me.

It really is the first album - it has to be. That was the introduction; that was the entrance into preternatural dark enchantment. Iommi's hammer-ons, Geezer's bohemian thump, Butler's skins thwap and Ozzy's  bullfrog neck, blues bellow. The perfect effort.

So Bill Ward gets no credit at all?

I definitely agree with you guys that the first 4 are the best and that sbs and sabotage are close behind but I honestly like technical ecstacy. I think that while it really doesn't sound dark and doom enough to fit in with their classic material that doesn't change the fact that that there is some serious rocking on that album. I think Iommi's soloing on TE is way ahead of it's time and some of his best. In the song gypsy the line where Ozzy goes "When I awoke in bed she lay beside me... and she read me with her eyes she said..." and then immediately that epic Iommi solo bursts forth I was like daaayummm.

I LOVE Technical Ecstasy.  :)  :)  :)

I still don't get all the hate towards it; it really is a good album. It's not all that happy sounding either.... 'You Won't Change Me' and 'She's Gone' sound really dark. I think the only thing they changed on that album was that it really wasn't too occult influenced.

Same with Never Say Die!.... 'A Hard Road' and 'Junior's Eyes' sound really sad..You can hear it in Ozzy's voice that he's going through some tough times on those songs.Actually that whole album has this depressing vibe to it.  I feel that's what makes those albums so genuine and awesome.

Whichever one I am currently listening to is the best.

I even like stuff like Seventh Star and Eternal Idol.

Other than certain tunes from the post-Idol Tony Martin era there's really no Sabbath I don't like, but "Headless Cross" "Tyr" and "Cross Purposes" all have some good moments on those there's even some OK spots on "Forbidden"  You just have to have the patience to find them. Between the 4 albums I can put together a solid 80 minute "Best Of" mix CD.

The only Sabbath album I find pretty much unredeemable is, honestly, Seventh Star. It's just flat bad. Outside of that, I pretty much agree with you, Eddie.

That's always what I figured, too. One of these days I'll get all those tapes and do exactly that.

Seventh Star was supposed to be a Tony Iommi solo album so it's unfair to rate it as a Sabbath album. Blame Don Arden and Warner Bros.

Yep, Tom, I'm aware of that. In fact, I saw that tour which was just billed as Black Sabbath instead of Black Sabbath Featuring Tony Iommi.

Look, taken as what it is, it's not a bad album. In fact, for what it is, it's pretty good. But it is NOT a Black Sabbath album and never should have been billed as such. But, I also understand the reasons why it was.

Seventh Star was pretty much an 80's pop metal album, but I put songs like "No Stranger to Love" and "Heart Like A Wheel" over any thing say Poison or Great White and other bands of the like were doing.  I'll even take it over Ozzy's Ultimate Sin if we're talking that era.

Also listen to Death Dealer by Gates of Slumber then listen to In for the Kill from 7th Star, the first verses in each song have damn near the same lyrics.

I'll work on that Tony Martin mix tape this weekend.

I LOVE that song 'Danger Zone' off of Seventh Star...just that one song is way better than the entire Ultimate Sin album. 'Heart Like a Wheel' is a rad song too.

I read Glenn Hughes was way too messed up on coke during the '86 Seventh Star tour that he got fired midway through and was replaced my Ray Gillan. He messed up alot of the old songs live.
