Title: GAS thread
Post by: Omlet on September 16, 2014, 02:56:51 PM
I can't believe that there's no such thread... until now.

So, here is my biggest one. I need it badly but it's so fucking expensive here, even the basic version. Walnut ones are, well... I've never seen one :(

Pretty much every thread is the GAS thread up in here.

That said, I crave me a tricone, baritone National resonator guitar of the 12 fret variety.

Been GASing for a MIJ SG lately. Something like this would scratch that itch nicely.

that rick looks amazing!  I have the jetglo version.

I will admit that it does not sound any different really than my $200 epiphone thunderbird bass though.

I will buy a Rick for certain, however I don't know how many years will it take me :D
Now I'm trying hard to buy... Squier P-bass :( But salaries are late, as usual...

Want one so bad that I'm in the process of making one, I've already made full size plans, picked up about half the wood, saving for the Rickenbacker Mastery bridge, have bobbins for pickups and waiting on a roll of wire.

So yeah, there's some GAS for ya....

Hey MazeOfLiquidTone, is that Avatar pic a 4x12? I had one, the construction did not inspire confidence but it sounded excellent. I tried putting the speaks in a more robust box (a couple different ones actually..) but they never had that sweet sound as in the thin Avatar. Recommended.

For the longest fucking time I thought "all I need now is a good acoustic." Bam, one fell in my lap, possibly the finest I've ever played, and all was right in the Land of the Riff.

I had slightly similar situation with electric guitars. I owned (and still own) asian SG copy, decent 1987 Ibanez RR and uber-awesome custom guitar. But for many, many years I craved for a Tele. Without any clear reason, as I never had one in my hands. And finally, I grabbed the HWY-1.

Fuck other guitars, I haven't played a single note on any of them since I have the blondie.

EDIT: I need the 4001/4003. I fucking need it. It's the same situation as the one I had with Telecaster.

I posted the 4x10 which is said to be quality. I assume the 4x12 would destroy, good to know they sound excellent. Do you remember how thick the ply was? I don't offhand know what the norm is for bass cabs or guitar cabs but it's something I feel I should be aware of.

GC/MF is for under $500 I think as well. Their necks appear to be set in further which helps with balance. I'm looking for a special or G-310 for cheap used(despite previously deciding that low end guitars aren't worth fooling with).

Really thick ply is a sign of poorly made unbraced cabs. Cheaper to use thick ply and wind up with a heavy cab that pay for the labour to do it properly with thinner ply with bracing so its more rigid, less resonant and lighter.

I was watching a bunch of videos about that one NIN synth guy(weird name) and he walked some dude through his performance rig before a show. he had some wicked modular, a giant foot step selector for patches and samples. a prophet 12 and an octatrack, which he said was the wildest thing he owns. dude is a buchla fan fwiw.

he had a fuzz and 2 strymon delays. he had the big gold one and the sky blue one. that was his only guitar style pedals.  delays were made for synths.

what comes up short on the mooger delay that the strymon can do for you? (all those moogers are sick as fuck for sure)

edit: looks like a dx7 in the demo, I may have to watch it. I watched a couple strymon delay videos and that tape delay box thing..they were all nice. also their factory is set up cool. it reminds me of the production areas where I used to work. definitely a pro operation.

edit: oh man. that dark chant at the 7:03 minute mark is heavenly..........a DX21..wow. I wonder how many of those are out there. can't be many. wow.
Title: Re: GAS thread
Post by: RAGER on September 20, 2014, 01:09:08 PM
My Moog delay is the shit but the Big Sky is a reverb so.....  And did you notice in that vid he uses all cheapy synths?  Makes 'em sound huge.

I'm also borrowing something from Alessandro Cortini.  Remember in his rig rundown he uses different chords on a 4 track and just fades them in and out?  Yeah that.  Befor that I hadn't even touched my 4 track in years.  I might pick up a couple others.  Do just some beats on one and something on another.
Title: Re: GAS thread
Post by: jibberish on September 20, 2014, 01:56:29 PM
doh delay-reverb yeah, ok.  so focused on delays....

cool you saw that vid too. I was amazed at how hands on he likes to keep everything. lots of loops that he drops in with volume pedals or those tape deck channels. really interesting for sure.

I would suggest ordering it direct from strymon. IDK if there is a street price. I didn't see one. that sure is a hawt piece of gear.

ps. that beat step can do a shit ton of stuff. I watched a half dozen videos on that.  I plan on using it on the ground to step on sometimes. definitely cheap enough to get a second one if I want both the controller and sequencers at same time.

edit: hi-5. I still have my 4 track cassette too

editz: that tape deck trick is like a super simple mellotron. those were just an assload of tape loops triggered by keypresses

No worries. The 3 does more than the 2 and the Micro POG. Going to get a used one and experiment with it.

Yeah, he was saying though, there's something about THE model he uses that the others can't quite replicate. Overheard him gearheading out with the soundguy at a venue, going on about octavers.
Title: Re: GAS thread
Post by: liquidsmoke on September 29, 2014, 09:33:45 PM
I've read on various websites that the 2 sounds better but the 3 can also operate polyphonically with adjustable range. So basically it has Micro POG and OC-2 features and then some even if it doesn't sound as good as either or track as good as the Micro POG. I figure it's a good one to start with for experimentation.

wonder if this would make a nice little casual setup:

12 watt all tube 2x10. I dig my $99 greta a ton. this looks like more of the same. GC is doing them for $229.

and a nice Ibanez cut-away acoustic electric for $169. I cant find the picture, but they have a blue one and a black one.
damn.

anyway, for $400 this could be nice.  I think I may test out the combo later today. I also want to see what the deal on the TC electronics reverbs is since they have some of those that I can audition. also, there is a nice lexicon multi-effects unit in the used dept.

lexicon used to be expensive nice stuff. maybe score a vintage 2 grand reverb for a couple hundred some day. right now you can score seriously nice tube pre-amps and channel strips, compressors, etc for cheap. like the old school hi-end studio stuff that everyone is replacing or w/e

edit: also I am seriously scanning craigslist for a used taylor 314ce.  I saw one once. usually see more of those real expensive ones made out of all those weird woods, or 414ce's which sound lame, in spite of the higher price.
if any of you have a 314ce you want to sell. I give 9bills cashish right now for it.

Shit, looks tricky with the photo resistors and iso-thing for them. I don't have those parts just laying around :/

50 bucks:

Works for me. Metal housing, true bypass.

Negative: slight delay before it kicks in.

This pedal also boost the signal noticeably, which could be good or bad depending upon what you need.

Sample (pedal kicks on about .45 on a slow setting, then a faster setting around 3:15):

Ok maybe just a little gas.

I have to admit, that thing looks pretty cool. I'm sure it sounds great. At the same time though, it's funny to me the lengths that some of these "retro" design companies will go to to have old looking products. I can just imagine some of the conversations... "Ok good, it's got a meter..  What are we planning to case it in?" ... "hmm.. just some Hammond enclosures.. Hey, do we have any old wood laying around?.... hmm.. only new wood... Well can we make it look like old wood?"

That "pedal" is actually a dual mode ladder filter.  More of a nice looking desktop unit that does something similar and a bit more than the Moog ladder filter but for a fraction of the price.  Dude makes them out of his house about 20 minutes from me.  I think they're a nice looking and functional addition to any studio or live rig.  Take a listen.

I think maybe I'm GASing for an Orange AD200B, but I'm perfectly happy with my TB500 so maybe I'm not?  ???

I do GAS for a guy that can go through my SVT and make it good as new.  It's not broken or anything.  Just has some "things" that I notice from time to time but can't reproduce in front of anyone... Especially when I have both channels running at once.  It hums.  Not always, but it does and it bothers me.

I'd also like a recording device that has built in mics, but also the ability to plug in an external USB or XLR mic (or two).  On that device you could record multiple track files for each mic to a thumb drive in mp3 or wav or whatever dumb Mac format there is... THen you can take it to your house and import file into Reaper or whatever and go!  Actually, this is the main GAS... Recording devices that are available are way too complicated and full of unnecessary features.  Pick a mic (or two or three), pick a recording format, insert a thumb drive, and go!  That's it.

Hey Zachoff, the Zoom H9 can do what you want, I think. Has 4 direct inputs (1/4" or XLR) plus room mics (like the other Zooms). You can record 5 tracks at the same time, and they yield 5 separate files. One nice thing is that all input volume controls are external knobs. So if you use the same settings all the time (for me, WAV files, 48khz or whatever) you don't have to fuck around with digital menus, like you do with some Zooms. I love mine!

Also, are you jumping the channels on your SVT? My amp tech used to work at Ampeg as head of the service department - he told me you don't get any benefit from jumping channels (if that's what you're doing). Works for some amps (Fenders) but no point in doing it with the SVT. Something about how the signal is routed - you'd get extra EQ control for Channel 2 (which he said was designed like a V4 but more watts) but you could just use channel 1 instead (loads of EQ possibilities there) so really no point. (But maybe you're running two instruments through it at once?)

This guy, send it to him:

Title: Re: GAS thread

Not jumping channels, but I was splitting my signal w/ a looper.  Half would go clean to the Normal channel one.  Half would go dirty to the Bright channel two.  Was doing this to preserve low-end while still getting distortion.  I was using a loopmaster a/b/y and it would hum no matter if the signal to a was by itself or b was by itself or both were going at the same time.

Cool on the Zoom.  Is there any exporting and naming tracks?  We used to use a Tascam and it was a super ass pain to get it all named and exported and you could only save it to an SD card... Not a USB drive... So it sucked getting it onto your computer to mix/edit.
Title: Re: GAS thread
Post by: Lumpy on September 16, 2015, 09:15:11 PM
I use a card reader (little $12 gadget the same size as a thumb drive with a card slot). Importing gigabytes of data takes like a minute (it used to take a long-ass time to download tracks when I hooked my old H2 directly to the computer with a cable). So get a card reader. Pull the card from your Zoom and put it in the reader (I leave my Zoom at the jam space, and just bring the SD card back & forth).

Files are named like (first song)

ZOOM0001_LR (room mics, left-right)
ZOOM0001_Tr1 (track 1 direct input)
ZOOM0001_Tr2
ZOOM0001_Tr3
ZOOM0001_Tr4

second song is like
ZOOM0002_Tr1
etc.

That's all inside Folder 1. You have like a dozen more folders you can send to.

I don't know if you can rename stuff directly inside the zoom (folders or track names)... maybe? I wait until it's uploaded. I mainly worry about naming the folders I make (usually named with a date, and if I use the tracks maybe the folder gets renamed as a song). I'm big into organizing everything via folders and sub-folders. Inside each uploaded folders, I make a SimpleText file with notes on what the contents of the tracks are.

I really liked my H2 ($150) but carrying it around in my bag eventually killed it (I think). The H9 is expensive ($400?) but it's a good upgrade if you want a bunch of individual tracks recorded at the same time.

I also might have bought a laptop, an analog-to-digital converter (input box), and Reaper. That could have worked for me too. The Zooms can't surf the web and do other stuff a laptop can do.
