Title: Suggestions on 400w rackmount hybrid/ss bass heads
Post by: Danny G on January 07, 2011, 12:01:45 PM
As much as I love my rackmount Fender TB600, it may be time for it to go. 600w at 4ohms has me blowing speakers in just about every cab I use it with.

However, it has been nothing but 100% reliable, is built like a fucking TANK, and sounds pretty damn good.

Hate to see it go, but downsizing my 2nd string bass head may save me a lot of money in damaged speakers.

SO. Suggestions for a rackmount hybrid bass amp.

I am not a fan of most Ampeg SS/Hybrid heads. GK rackmount heads sound good but are built like toys.

*MUST be rackmountable! Because I am putting it in a rack

*I need something that can almost sound like an old tube head

*400w at 4 ohms MAX. As stated, 600w has me blowin shit up

*Built to LAST. Must be roadworthy roadworthy roadworthy, tired of shit breakin down on me.

Been loving my Peavey T-Max driving either one or two 2x15's was gigging that a lot. I did have a buddy lined up to convert one of the 2x15's into a 4x15 like the Sunn 415M.

Built like a tank' check.

Rack mount 2U, check.

Hybrid, check.

350-380W into 4ohms (500 into 2 ohms), check.

It does have a tendency to hit the limiter early, if you have pre and post gain max'd.

Bonus feature: has a built in crossover, which let me jumper low out into the power amp in, turning the crossover into a nice low pass control, better than the graphic EQ, which I never touch.

Also is 'two channel' allows you to switch between tube pre, solid state pre, or both, never used that, can't comment on it.

Picked mine up for a couple of hundred from a dude in STL.

As used by Jo Bench, in my eyes, the hottest bass player on the planet.

I like my Yorkville XS400H you could probably get a used one for 200-300 400w at 4ohm.  Its a nice transparent head lets your bass' tone really come out.

Danny, it seems you have broken your mstr vol knob off at 11.  This is comforting to know.  god bless eleven.

Heh, that and who would have thought that bass feedback was actually BAD for speakers.

Thanks for the suggestions, keep em coming. Used is better, as I can't afford anything new right now

Might be out of his price range and those are hard to find used for cheap.  I LOVE the distortion on the LMII though a friend had one.  Reminds me of those old SS distortion on Acoustic amps.

You just have the wrong speakers  ::)

Bass feedback is a cure-all.

There's a Mark Bass Little Mark II in the TalkBass classifieds for 385 dollars (includes shipping). 500 watts @ 4ohms in a bantam featherweight package. (about 600 bucks new)
http://www.talkbass.com/forum/showthread.php?t=727109 (http://www.talkbass.com/forum/showthread.php?t=727109)

I would lurk in the TB classifieds if I were you...

Oh yeah, you can get rack ears for that, if it really needs to live inside a rack.
