Title: Mesa Boogie Studio Preamp
Post by: Naxzul on February 04, 2013, 05:23:09 PM
So I know someone who is selling one of these things for cheap and I'm considering buying it to get a poor man's Master of Puppets sound! Apparently you can use it with a 'normal' amp head like a Marshall or whatever so instead of buying a power amp I'd probably just use it with my Orange Rockerverb. My question is...(and sorry if it sounds dumb/n00b hahaha) but if I do that will it combine BOTH tones when I run it through my 4x12? That is, will I be able to get the Mesa sound mixed in with the Orange sound into one big gnarly metal tone?

Thanks

This is what it can sound like...normally I wouldn't go out of my way to buy one but this is a good price so I figured why not.

You'd probably want plug it in to the FX return on the Rockerverb. Thus you'd get a Mesa Preamp and Orange Poweramp tone.

running it into the power amp most likely will not get both tones. The power amp is just one of the parts of an amp, just like the preamp. Both the rockerverb and the mesa share a similar phase inverter and power amp topology so it will not be a melding of the oranges preamp tone with the mesa

This is true, but like dunwich says it'll be mesa tones all day.

Alright, so to get those tones I'm looking at having to run two amps? Thanks for your input folks!

If the pre is cheap, buy a cheap poweramp. Problem solved

Well, it'll be Mesa Preamp and Orange Poweramp. But yeah, not a blend of Orange and Mesa tone indeed.
