Title: rack cases
Post by: justinhedrick on February 09, 2011, 10:58:27 AM
anyone use rack cases for their gear on a regular basis? i wanted to rack up a power amp i have and possibly rack up my sovtek midget head so make setup/tear down/transport easier.

any suggestions? we don't tour, and play 1 sometimes 2 shows a month.

SKB is pretty good and reasonable. I got a 8 space for my SVT, power conditioner and sonic max. The only one they had in stock at the time was one with wheels and a pull out carry handle. I was bummed but bought it anyway. Now Im glad I did, that fucker is so easy to load in/out.

Go cheap if you're not playing out much and not interested in the resale value.

I lug around a 6-space rack housing my power conditioner, wireless unit and backup bass head.

SKB or Gator brand for me (high impact plastic). If you can get away with it, both brands make shallow versions of their cases (the full size ones are like 20 inches deep, the shallow ones are more like 12 inches deep - check to confirm measurements). I like the high impact plastic ones over wood - lighter and don't absorb rain, spilled beer, but you might prefer the looks of a wooden box (looks more like "guitar amp"). Any kind of rack is surprisingly expensive for what it is (a box with lids). If your amp has vents on top (instead of front or rear) you probably want to get a case that's bigger to allow room for ventilation. I think the plastic cases originally came from a military application - they are really durable, they're not cheap or shitty. Buy used if possible (check Ebay, Craigs List for road cases, Gator, skb etc)

Thanks, Sunn. I haven't been building for awhile, too time consuming and haven't created adequate workspace in the garage at new place anyway (been hear more than a year...)
