Post by: Woody on August 20, 2013, 09:43:01 AM
Thinking about doing this with my SG. Anyone have any experience with this mod?

Sunn, would the 50's wiring help my Goddess issue?

I think this will help me achieve that woody jtm45/bluesbreaker tone.

I own my own business and I'm too poor to afford an accountant, so I do my own. Somedays I think I should have just studied accounting instead of electronics.

Unless they're German I don't do imports. I'll stick with domestic lesbian.

I did some reading. On 50's wiring and it is basically where you put the tone cap in the circuit.  Makes for less mud when you role your volume back but now your tone pot effects the volume.  It's a trade off but sounds like a good one because I use my volume way more than tone and always hated how it got muddy.

You've got a Goddess? It should be a collectors' item if you don't like it, right? The blue-burst SG?

Red-burst.  I got Jake to put some Winos in it, but there is some kind of wiring problem (that was also present with the Gibson pickups).  It's a beautiful guitar & is perfect except for the wiring issue.  It drives Jake and me nuts.

Weird. Maybe it's haunted?

I think that's what Jake said.

With a fresh solder joint, the pickups work perfect. After a few hours, the joint goes cold or something and cuts output 90% on tje bridge only. This happened to another Gibson that showed up in my shop. Fully rewired it and it didn't solve it.

Only thing I would add is that the bass output is primarily what is cut.

Seriously Jake, send me a list of what I should get to redo the bitch (like specific values, etc).  Switch has already been replaced, right?

I think I'm going to give it a go on my strat tomorrow and do the 50's mod.

Alright I did the mod, over all very nice.  Here is a video of the project.  I was kind of nervous, never done a video like this before.  I hope that some of you will like it enough to try the mod yourselves.

I have it on my Jap LP, the guy before me ripped out the original electronics for the rip-off Gibson bumblebee caps. Anyway, I do find it pretty cool if you're using a single channel amp, keeps it sparkly when rolling down and not flat/muddy. I will probably do it to my SG as well without those rip-off bumblebee caps.
