Title: Post Your Jams, Improvs, One-Offs and Practices
Post by: Dave J on January 19, 2018, 05:51:02 PM
I thought I'd start a new thread for people that have recordings of practices or jams, but which don't necessarily fit in the "songs" that you've recorded, or videos, or whatnot. We record all of our practices, and sometimes there are some gems that may not ever turn into full songs, but are worth listening to. Sometimes we just jam and improv some that may be worth posting.

Here's a bit that I've been wanting to post for awhile. Our bass player was not at practice, so the other guitar player took up the bass and came up with this riff. We played around with it for 3 minutes and then started over with this one (which is why it is #2). This is a live take. I kinda like how it flowed naturally and we traded off licks while keeping the basic riff going throughout. You may notice that I was fishing around for the right sounds here and there, so I switched between different fuzz pedals. I think I settled on the Green Russian Big Muff.

I hope the link works.

One more to add. This is a jam song we play frequently, but the leads and solos are obviously just improvised. We have a basic structure to the into and the basic riffs, but the leads are just us wanking off.

Again, this is a live take. For anyone who cares, I'm the second guitar that comes in on this song with the big D chord and the first lead break after that, and then we trade off leads. Enjoy!

Well I retired the ol' Tascam 414, since those suckers are going for around $400 unboxed (thx hipsters!) & mine is in pretty good shape.

So I bought me a new toy: a used Tascam DP-03SD.

Some Post-Rockish tunes I'm working on:

It's a cool guitar expression. Its a windows wma file that mac won't play so I converted it to WAV using Audacity so I could play it on mac. Used the Audacity normalizer effect to make it louder. Dong, if you want the wav file I could post it here. I don't have a file host to otherwise upload it to.

It plays on my Mac just fine. That mediafire link says the WMA file is compatible with Mac.

How does dong get his virual band hooked up? I have no clue and have a short temper so its got to be easy-peasy.
Title: Re: Post Your Jams, Improvs, One-Offs and Practices

I think those are wav files, they're 15 years old and I have 50 of them. Now I have 50 new ones recorded on my phone and again sent to mediafire, but they're recorded unplugged while I had headphones on for my big muff sound, so I gotta run them all through a plug in and see how they come out before seeing if I have anything.

Seen somewhere someone said Reaper. Is it cheap and compatible? Been thinking about buying pro tools and a powerful laptop, then I need a dummy box and interface so I don't blow a tube amp without a cabinet, right? Been doing a little research. Was about to shell out some money but the market just tanked again and that kind of money gets tied up.

It's nice if you can record a real amp with a microphone, but now they have pretty good digital amp simulation (they are plug ins, you use them inside your DAW aka Logic, pro tools, Reaper). It's good enough for demos and stuff.
Title: Re: Post Your Jams, Improvs, One-Offs and Practices
Post by: dong ytown on June 22, 2020, 07:05:30 PM
But in an apartment situation I was looking to plugging my head into a dummy box  so the tubes don't blow then to a computer, or can I go pedal straight to computer? I just know I can't record unplugged, it's totally blowing it.
Title: Re: Post Your Jams, Improvs, One-Offs and Practices
Post by: Lumpy on June 22, 2020, 08:28:15 PM
Yeah it goes from your pedals into an ADC (analog digital converter) audio interface. There are tons of them, brands like Presonus, MOTU, etc. There are really expensive ones with like 8 XLR inputs if you want to record a whole band. I have one from Echo "Audiofire 2"  that has  two 1/4" inputs, and then it goes into your computer with FireWire. It was like $100, I saw good review that said it's a good brand and I got the cheapest simplest one. On the back there's also two outputs that go to my monitors (I usually use headphones and leave the monitors off). It's a little expensive hobby but if you start with an interface that's enough.

They even have guitar cables with 1/4" on one side, and USB one the other, those are like $40 (not that much more than a regular guitar cable).

I also use a little direct box at the end of my pedal chain, it's a preamp/overdrive, it just seems to make the guitar sound nicer.  Sansamp Paradriver by Tech 21, it has EQ and I can adjust the tone that way. Pedals into Sansamp into the ADC into the computer. You can find stuff used on Reverb because a lot of people start small like me and then expand. It might be harder to find deals because of the pandemic, I don't know. Probably any Sansamp will work.

I forget which amp simulator plug ins are good, you can get expensive ones, Logic has ones that comes included (Amp Designer). There are free ones (Guitar Amp Pro, either I gout it free or it comes with Logic.) Lately I just use synths direct into the computer and I record guitars at my practice space. But amp simulators let you pick which kind of amp, which kind of mic etc.

You should get an audio interface first probably and then see what you think.

You have a PC? Then probably get Reaper. You can keep renewing your free license, or buy it for like $60. If you have a Mac you can use Garage Band, it usually comes free. Logic is like an expanded version of Garage Band. I use Logic Express the cheaper version which doesn't have Midi or a library of instruments because I don't need that.

Post by: Lumpy on June 22, 2020, 08:43:10 PM
You can also use Audacity, you don't need a whole fancy DAW like GarageBand, Reaper etc if you're not trying to build a complex track. To just share files, trim the beginning, find the good sections, etc, you can get by with Audacity. Then you don't have to learn a complicated software, at least not right away.

For the DI box, probably anything that says Sansamp will work.

You can learn how to use the software with YouTube videos.

Dong, you need to spend $1200 for the d"ummy load" if you care aboot your amp. ie Unversal Audio OX. (edit, another big important forgot I name, will edit, Oh, the VHT guy, Steve) has one. Two-Notes, another. $$big-buck$$ solutions. You must pay.

try this questionare for fun. *=(not a dummy, but virtual/computer interface. A decent start.
https://audient.com/interface-finder/ (https://audient.com/interface-finder/)

The audient is not what you asked for but...piping a real amp is Not going to happen.

Lumpy has it.

I'll send yo a free POD Studio GX - a computer interface single input guitar amp faker computer interface - it's good enough for popcorn. PM me deliery addreess, anonomous, no sig - If you're a nerd with the computer you'll be off and running. If you're not a comptuer nerd then. not worthwhile.

^^ Oh that's a nice offer  - the Pod guitar input. That's like a $35 value (saw that on Reverb.com). Good way to get up and running. Dong you should take him up on his offer.

I think the super expensive studio interfaces might have nicer digital converters, but I doubt my ears would be able to tell. You could spend money on a nice preamp, but it's not like we care about beautiful clean tone - it's fuzz rock, it's not like an acoustic piano recording. There is no clean tone.

I used to have a 1x12 VHT (Fryette) combo amp, it was a darned if you do darned if you don't kinda amp. I should have kept it. I still have the Ultimate attenuator - should have never bought it because I don't use it - but maybe I'll get it out and try it, now that you mention it.

Man I got a lot of info in this thread, and I understand it from the YouTube videos I was researching a couple weeks ago. Yeah I'll build everything cheap for now, just gotta get the electric sound captured, it's the rhythms I need to build a collection of, you never know when they'll come.

I also got a line out on this combo amp next to the headphone jack, see how that works straight to a laptop or interface, then try straight from my pedals. I'm thinking 1200 on a new laptop that will last a few years, my laptops hardly work. I need to record everything and cut later, I could be working on scales exercises and a rhythm jumps out of nowhere, and if you stop to hit record you already lost it.

Bookmarking those websites to check out later..

Do you notice that when you go like a week without playing, your improv is off the fucking charts?

If playing is telling a story, the interim between jams is for collecting stories to tell.

I like that.

It's only rock 'n roll. Get real.

That's as real as it gets, mother fucker.

That's a nice idea and rings true, except dude was talking about taking a week off. How many interesting stories are you collecting inside a week?

I still contend it has to do with a break in muscle memory. When you're jamming, you fall back on riffs that you already know how to play. Even free jazz players do that. But maybe those old riffs aren't so automatic when you take a little break, which leads to new solutions based on melodic ideas and not where your fingers used to feel most comfortable.

Thanks man. Intentionally disconnected drums. Not an arpeggio playing but random triggered LFOs controlling the voices and some delay. The Peak really is a powerhouse. It's kept me from buying a Prophet Rev2. It would be nice to have a 16 voice though. I already don't utilize what I have.

Ok totally different. I actually recorded some decent audio of my Orange. 72 OR120 , 72 cab. I've got a mix of speakers in top cab but a Greenback is what is mic'd. Les Paul Classic 2006 I think. Seymour Duncan Whole Lotta humbucker in the bridge. Stock in the neck. Sm57 into iRig into Soundcraft MTK22's interface into iPhone.

Having a jam room in the basement = total dream.

I have to rent a practice space, it's shared with other people, and no room for a couch or mini fridge etc. it's not a place you would want to hang out and do bong rips.

I've had a basement in every place I've lived since 1993. It's a must.

I've played in a couple bands that practiced in a shared space. It wasn't too bad because it was in a basement in a house where friends lived so it was cool to hang and party. I always packed up all my gear and it's me every time instead of leaving it like others cuz it was kind of a party house.

Hi guys, I have two things to share with you:

This was my last uploaded recording of 2020 and it's actually a video... not audio only like I used to do so yes, there are a few funny faces and intense headbanging occurring in some parts:

My first recording of 2021, audio only, recorded on January 6 using an iPhone 3GS with no external mics. Sorry for the mistakes here and there in both videos but I always get a little nervous when I record myself:

First clip sounds good, even through my little IPad speaker. I can totally image the other instruments filling in, if it was a full band. Your ideas are well developed, I can't imagine other people wouldn't be interested in joining you, because songwriters are probably the hardest thing to find (or maybe drummers, I don't know). Bass players should be easy to find.

Sounds like an octave fuzz, is it a Zvex Octane lll ? They are heavy...

Yep, really inspiring stuff Stonergrunge. I really admire your gift for organizing riffs into cohesive songs, there's so much momentum that you really do hallucinate a full band like Lumpy said.
Title: Re: Post Your Jams, Improvs, One-Offs and Practices
Post by: Stonergrunge on January 15, 2021, 12:57:49 AM
Thank you very much for your support, guys.

"Caminata Espacial" starts with a combination of octavia/fuzz and delay (MJM Roctavios + MJM London Fuzz), after that I use the switching system to go back and forth between octavia/fuzz and fuzz only (MJM London Fuzz II + Sunmachine Reptile Fuzz), whereas "Gárgamel" uses my fuzz only combo of London Fuzz II and Reptile Fuzz. I can't stress enough the importance of the RC-3 Looper in both instrumentals though... that pedal has been a game changer since I got it.

But how did you play both parts at the same time though??!

What is your fuzz, is it different for each part, or did you use the same setup?
Title: Re: Post Your Jams, Improvs, One-Offs and Practices
Post by: Lumpy on January 22, 2021, 02:06:50 PM
I was joking but maybe you're using a looper. Was that recorded live in your space? Or multitracked?
Title: Re: Post Your Jams, Improvs, One-Offs and Practices
Post by: renfield on January 22, 2021, 02:34:43 PM
It's multitracked. Guitar -> Scarlett 2i2 audio interface -> Ableton Live; all the sounds are Ableton amp modeling and effects.

I've never used Ableton before, just downloaded the free demo while my macbook gets repaired. It has some nutty effects! For example this is the "Long Tape" delay (over the same loop):

Title: Re: Post Your Jams, Improvs, One-Offs and Practices
Post by: renfield on January 22, 2021, 02:37:48 PM
^ I don't really get how that effect works, it seems to be able to tell when I'm playing notes, and makes crazy noises when I'm not?
Title: Re: Post Your Jams, Improvs, One-Offs and Practices
Post by: Lumpy on January 22, 2021, 04:16:55 PM
It could be set to default self-oscillate, so when you're not playing notes it's like runaway feedback. Try turning the delay time down (sometimes you gotta turn Time all the way down, with a stomp box) to squelch the oscillations that happen just by plugging in, then when it's quiet bring the time knob up and find a sweet spot.
Title: Re: Post Your Jams, Improvs, One-Offs and Practices
Post by: RAGER on January 22, 2021, 04:40:07 PM
I think it's usually the mix or blend knob that does it.  I'll go check.
Title: Re: Post Your Jams, Improvs, One-Offs and Practices
Post by: RAGER on January 22, 2021, 04:45:11 PM
Yep.  Blend and/or feedback.  Rate just changes the speed of oscillation.  I've got a deluxe memory many tap tempo that I can control those functions with an expression pedal.  It's currently on my main board.

Thank you Rager!  In pre pandemic life, I was a live sound/production guy.  Without gigs and crazy hours, I really just focused on writing and practicing both guitar and mix engineering for recording.  I really hope to get an album or at least an EP done before regular life resumes.  The Airgigs thing was a godsend - I like electronic drums in electronica but real drums are so key for good rock music.

Although I first introduced this song in 2018 on SoundCloud, that early version was mostly improvised and a bit messy. I recorded this version last Saturday and I consider it to be the definitive one. The way the song goes has been fairly stable over the last year and the improvisational parts are better defined. The title of this one are two political slangs used in Chile to refer to leftist people ("Zurdo progre") and right-wingers ("Facho pobre"). As always, there are a few details here and there, but nothing serious.

And here is another instrumental recorded during the same rehearsal:

Thank you! No Rats here, I have never used a Rat in my life, I do have seen plenty of Rats (the standard one, Dirty, Turbo...) but I don't remember having played one. In both tracks the main distortion is the combination of the MJM London Fuzz II and the Sunmachine Reptile Fuzz. No acoustic treatment on my walls, though... just a plain room  ;D

My process is: I'll set up a drum loop, and then hit record and try to come up with riffs
Then I'll listen back and find the riffs I like, and discard the ones that I immediately realize are simply stolen.
..and that's where I get stuck. It's just a bunch of riffs, I don't know how or if they fit together into a song. The other boys in the band come in with fully formed songs with all the transitions between the parts, an overall shape and everything!

last night's riffs:

I hear ya. I don't have anybody to bounce ideas off. I just came up with a cool riff idea I like so it must be somebody else's.

Or maybe that's just my self defense mechanism to keep me from actually doing anything.

i love playing free jazz for just this reason. total freedom. no riffs or structure to adhere to. its the difference between abstract paintings and paintings of objects. weve been dabbling in some free jazz since last summer. the more we play it, the more it feels like that all i want to do anymore.

My buddy John and I do this. We call it stoner jazz.  Just us two.  Me on drums him on bass. If I were to play guitar with another stringed instrument or keys there would have to be key structure. Play as long or whatever on time but it'd have to be in key.

You must embrace microtones. Then you are never technically out of key.

Ive been a fan of free jazz for a long time. Back in the mid 2000s i had a great free jazz band that was just synth, el. Bass and sax. No drums in the core group. I found it very liberating being in a band with no drums from a bass player perspective. It really changed my approach to the instrument since i was completely broken from the traditional role of bass playing. Occassionally we would join with other jazz ensembles and have a drummer, 2 or 3 sax players and guitar. Those were the best and wildest shows ive ever played. One of my most favorite local bands was the blood and bone orchestra. They consisted of drums, upright bass, sax and guitar. I am friends the guys. One time their bassist (and drummer) was unable to make an out of town gig and the sax player called me and asked if i could sub. I was honored to sit in. He picked me up and on the way to the gig, i asked him what we were going to do. Now, i knew everything was improvised but i figured there might be some theme or something. He looked at me and said 'we have one rule in this band, we dont talk about what we are going to play'. We got to the gig set up, stepped out and smoked up. Came back in and went on. It was a wild ride and one of the best gigs i ever played. Thats the first pic. The second is my free jazz band with a mando player and the sax player from babo sitting in with us.(https://i.ibb.co/kKGSNMK/BABO-1.png) (https://ibb.co/kKGSNMK)

Speaking of my jazz band (NPV), there was that one time i managed to get us on this show with lo pan and backwoods payback (im pretty sure you guys know who those bands are around here). It was a weird gig for us to be sure but i think some people dug it, not everyone.

As always, mistakes are guaranteed to happen and the mic of the cellphone sucks, but anyway...

Chain: Lyon By Washburn guitar - Warm Audio Foxy Tone Box (octave on) - Frost Giant Electronics The Maryland Doomfest '23 Massif Fuzz - Frost Giant Electronics Little Acid Fuzz - BOSS DD8 Digital Delay (Shimmer mode) - BOSS RC3 Loop Station (with BOSS FS7 Dual Foot Switch) - Washburn South Side VGA30R amplifier.

You need a band.

I would like to but nobody cares around here and... besides, if I had a band I would probably be deaf by now  ;D  ;D

By the way, here is my latest video (audio only). This is my interpretation of how a nasty wall of fuzz/distortion should sound like. For this tune, I used my Reverend Flatroc guitar, a little bit of the Real McCoy Custom RMC3FL wah and mostly the MJM London Fuzz II and the Sunmachine Reptile Fuzz together:

Stonergrunge, you sure have top quality taste in stomp boxes.  It's fun to hear your stuff. I had an RMC but mistakenly sold it, might have to look them up again. Wah's are probably a rabbit hole, so many flavors. RMC has like 10 of them or something. Oops I do have an auto-wah, those are weird. Oh, I have a custom made cocked-wah. Super duper rare one. Like 1-of-1 from a master builder. Your post above encourages me to make a clip or two/bring my stomp boxes out of storage.

Wahs are always fun but I'm too brutal with them (the pot always gets noisy after a while).

By the way, this is my latest video and quite possibly the last one that I will ever upload as "audio only" to YouTube. This is also an instrumental but I'm only using one pedal here, the MJM London Fuzz II, with the neck pickup of my Reverend Flatroc and the tone knob rolled-back for an extra MUDDY fuzz.

All the words spoken in "A través del Túnel del Sueño" were improvised on the spot. "Bienvenidos al Caos" starts around 08:27 and features the most disgusting and violent wall of fuzz I could achieve by using not one (or two) but four dirt pedals at the same time: MJM Roctavios (with the Boost knob almost all the way up), MJM London Fuzz, MJM London Fuzz II and Sunmachine Reptile Fuzz.

fucking heavy. i jumped ahead to the 4 dirt pedals section. dripping with fuzz. makes your ears feel like they are barefoot on a shag carpet from the 70s.

Thanks for all the comments you guys, I really appreciate them a lot. Yes, there is a gong in two moments of the video, I downloaded a bunch of gongs many years ago, I honestly don't remember right now the name of the website but maybe you can still find something around the web.

And by the way, here is my latest video (and quite possibly the penultimate one for a while), this is a pretty wild improvisation that was completely recorded with my cellphone so I had to enhance the audio with Audacity in order to compensate for some volume level fluctuations. The gear I mostly used was: Lyon By Washburn guitar - Warm Audio Foxy Tone Box (octave on) - Frost Giant Electronics Little Acid Fuzz - BOSS DD8 Digital Delay (Shimmer mode) - BOSS RC3 Loop Station (with BOSS FS7 Dual Foot Switch) - Washburn South Side VGA30R amplifier... and yes, there are a few mistakes here and there but nothing too serious.

This instrumental was recorded using the Warm Audio Foxy Tone Box along with the Frost Giant Electronics Maryland DoomFest '23 Massif Fuzz plus the Boss RC-3 Loop Station for the rhythmic section during the solo and the Boss DD-8 Digital Delay, the looped rhythmic section was recorded using the Frost Giant Electronics Little Acid Fuzz.

Learning how to play the acoustic guitar is going slowly, but I'm really enjoying it. Compositionally, the 8 string baritone continues to astound me with its possibilities and idiosyncracies
