Is there anything cool I can do with an old, slow netbook?

That's the thing.  I have a Kindle, a Kindle Fire and an iPad, so the netbook is just sitting there.  I can't stand using it anymore cause it is so fucking slow and the screen is so damn small.

Get a basic usb keyboard controller and use it for vst plugins. there are tons of free ones that mimic the gamut of classic synths.

edit: I didn't catch the SLOW part. Maybe not so good then.

Well it's relative.  Certainly not Commodore 64 slow. Just a 3 year old netbook.

Mine is older than that, and it works fine for that purpose.

SNES emulator and a NES emulator and a PS1 style USB joystick. Super fun.

Rock out on some old Donkey Kong Country or NHL 94 or something.

I have one in the garage that's close to 10 years old, I use with Ubuntu.  My garage Internet surfer, I use it for streaming my buddy's heavy broadcast on Sunday nights, and looking up things for whatever project I might be working on.

Bonus is it's a music player as well, so I don't need my iPod out there necessarily. The downside is that it's painfully slow with the most recent Ubuntu, and I've found running older versions doesn't work well. Updates are almost mandatory ever 6 months. Otherwise, after you're three upgrades behind, it's difficult to skip versions to the most current. Then a clean re-install is necessary. My experience anyway, I'm sure more savvy folks have figured out the most efficient way to use it.
Vinyls.   deal.

Can't you use it to record with Reaper?

You should be able to alright. Long as you keep the number of plugins low it's a really light DAW. Great too!

Use it along with an external hard drive as a network file server to share music and video files to all of the other devices that you have.
