The second half of #6 is not true. I have handled hundreds of new Shure microphones, sm-57, sm-58, UA, ULX and UR kits purchased directly from Shure.  They come with vinyl(pleather) bags, not leather.

The fakes normally don't have a transformer so if you open them up it's just hot glue and tissue or newspaper.

The real ones will have different colours either side or the transformer so if you open up the capsule end and the xlr end and it's the same wire or same colour wires then it's fake.

the weight difference is also generally down to the lack of transformer too so fake one will e much lighter.

Also the fakes are more rounded, less teardrop-y, and tend sit higher on the chest. Many times, they will also feel unnaturally firm, with a small scar near the edge of the areola or in the armpit.

Buy from a reputable dealer with good reviews/ratings. If you've never heard of the place, the price is too good to be true and/or it ships from Asia then buyer beware. 57's and 58's don't cost that much, I don't see much of a reason to cheap out on those mics and I'm a cheap bastard.

buying a used 58 is possibly the most disgusting thing i could think of.
get them new for $80-90 every now and then when there is a good promo. or $50 at the end of the show heh

haha that's EXACTLY what i was imagining..and it would more likely be a 58 and not a 57. that is deep level gross-out territory for me
