The Box. Utter shit. Ridiculously bad when it had at least (an initial) concept that was kind of cool. The further the movie went along the further it devolved into confusion, unrelated plot devices, and weirdness for, seemingly, the sake of weirdness.

Apparently it was based upon a short story by the guy who wrote "I Am Legend", Robert Matthieson? (sp)? I can only hope the story is not as frustrating as the movie was.

Pretty depressing throughout the film except for the very end. Reminded me of Gummo in tone and style as it's done in a semi documentary way.

Decent amount of nudity?

You ever seen Gegen die Wand (Head-On in the US)?  That was a mind fucker.

Supposed to be decent.  My wife wants to see it, so we'll get it from Netflix at some point.

Is this film any good? I'm considering adding it to my queue.

Not great but still pretty good.

There's two long scenes with an ample amount of nudity nothing more outside of that.

No I haven't seen that film Head-On but I just saw a trailer for it and it does look interesting.

The Shocker

Salt.  Sometimes I forget how bad big budget Hollywood action movies can be.  What a total piece of shit.

I saw Chloe when I was in Poland and watched Black Swan last night. Chloe sucked big time but had a better girl on girl (woman) love scene than Black Swan. Black Swan was OK, not great and the story took forever to develop. I think I've been spending way too much time with my lez-be friends, I need to watch a heterosexual movie this week.

"The Way Back" which was inspired by the book "The Long Walk" by Slawomir Rawicz. Not very good, imo (the movie, that is).

Care to give an opinion on I Saw the Devil?  Saw a trailer and it looks intense!  It's up next on my Netflix queue.

It is extremely intense. Very violent and quite gory. The cab scene alone was a blood bath. If you liked Old Boy, Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance and/or Lady Vengeance then you'll definitely like this movie. It's from the same director and a lot of the same actors used in the other three films are also in this film. I highly recommend it.

Loved Lady Vengeance, like Oldboy a lot and was meh on Mr Vengeance.  Got the movie from Netflix the other day - the 2 1/2 hour running time is going to be a committment though.

I just saw the new pirates movie.  It was OK the ONLY redeeming factor was Geoffory Rush who basically dominates the screen whenever hes on.  I was a bit disappointed that Ian McShane wasn't better as BlackBeard, I blame his dialogue which was awful.  Johnny Depp was pretty hit or miss.  Awful story too I know the book this is based on is 100x better.  (and if they are going to make a Tim Powers book a movie I want The Anubis Gates)

I'd give it 2 to 2.5 stars and recommend renting it.  This is probably an inflated rating but it did give me a couple pretty good laughs.

stuff i've watched streaming on netflix this past week or so:

hubert selby - it'll be better tomorrow - i've never read any selby and didn't know anything about him before watching this doc.  i am now very intrigued and will be reading him soon.  i didn't know that there was a novel requiem for a dream that the movie was based on.  great fuckin movie.

william s. burroughs: a man within - this one was cool for me because, although i've read several of burroughs' masterworks, i really knew very little (nothing) about his life other than that he killed his wife.  i enjoyed getting some of the backstory.  it was a little strange to get a picture of him as a man living in the real world dealing with life in the real world.  half expected him to inhabit a meditteranean land of talking typewriters that dispense opiates and fuck you...if you've been really good.

bukowski - born into this - halfway thru it.  i've seen it before - several times - but it bears rewatching.  i mean, come on, it's the buk.

Wait, I thought this was based on the Disney ride?  I've never seen a single one of these.  Not being a snob, but when my wife (who is a HUGE Johnny Depp fan) didn't like the first one I decided to pass.

Not bad ...until you reach the end, then it's just plain garbage.

It is based off the disney ride except for the last movie which ripped the plot from the Tim Powers novel "On Stranger Tides" which is why its called Pirates of the Carribean: On Stranger Tides.  Its basically the book + the pirates characters.  Passing is probably a good idea the first one is pretty good it rapidly goes downhill.

Watched Black Swan, didn't really care for it.  Certainly didn't seem Oscar worthy.

"Man on Wire" - really nice documentary (with some docu-drama sections) about Phillip Pettite who walked across a highwire stretched between the two World Trade Center buildings, back in 1974. Recommended.

"Gaslands" - Disturbing documentary about hydraulic fracturing ('fracking') where gas companies inject water and chemicals into the ground under high pressure, in order to release natural gas trapped underground. Shows people lighting their tap water on fire, due to chemical contamination. Recommended.
Rock & Roll is background music for teenagers to fuck to.
