The Shocker

"Man on Wire" - really nice documentary (with some docu-drama sections) about Phillip Pettite who walked across a highwire stretched between the two World Trade Center buildings, back in 1974. Recommended.

"Gaslands" - Disturbing documentary about hydraulic fracturing ('fracking') where gas companies inject water and chemicals into the ground under high pressure, in order to release natural gas trapped underground. Shows people lighting their tap water on fire, due to chemical contamination. Recommended.

That Man On Wire dude is fucking crazy.  Watching him walk the wires just about gave me an anxiety attack (I'm scared of heights).

I know... when he talks about finally taking that first step on the WTC wire, and taking his weight off the building and putting all his weight on the wire... yikes! I even got creeped out watching him peering over the edge of the building. Freaky heights!

I saw "Slow Southern Steel" last weekend at the Little Rock Film Festival, Ben Hogg was in attendance, too. It's a good document; the trailers are a good example of the thing as a whole. Music segments with Dixie Witch, Beaten Back to Pure, Hank III in his jamroom, as well as many-an-interview w/ Jim Bower, Hank, Mr. Hogg, Erik Larson, Phil Anselmo, Mike Williams, yours truly--briefly, thank the lo'--Brian Patton, Sammy Duet, Pepper Keenan, loads of other Southern gents. We (Seahag) played the afterparty with Music Hates You and Iron Tongue (C.T.'s other band), good times overall.
The movie's gonna show at various film festivals the rest of the year, unsure about further distribution..

i really wanna see this thing.  glad it's finally finished.

How shitty was I Am Number 4?

Out of Sight.  Still holds up & back when Jennifer Lopez was appealing and not a total ego monster.

I didn't think I Am Number 4 was that bad. I also didn't go into the movie expecting much from it. Had some good action to it, and the blonde in it was pretty sweet.

"Won't Anybody Listen" - lame low-budget documentary from 2001 about how how hard it is to "make it" in music... not anything you haven't seen before, by now. They follow a band "NC-17" as they mail out demo tapes etc. "Why won't the A&R guys just do their jobs??!!" Well for one thing, their music is incredibly generic and boring, despite whatever good reviews they read in the local music newspaper. There's some fakey live club footage where they overdub cheers from a stadium show. A real time waster. At the end, the kicker: Executive Produced by the two brothers in the band. The band paid for their own 60 minute infomercial about how they should have been signed already. Really awful. Netflix shouldn't even be distributing this turkey.

How was this one?  I saw a trailer for it on another DVD.  A lot of big names for a (essentially) straight to DVD release...

Cedar Rapids...

Saw it last night...extremely well written comedy. Do yourself a favor and rent it/watch it. John C Reilly is perfectly cast and pulls off a career making performance. Fucking A+ riot.

Saw "Cave of Forgotten Dreams" yesterday, its the new Werner Herzog documentary about this cave in France that houses possibly the most ancient visual art known to man, dating back to 35000 years ago. Pretty interesting stuff.

Also FINALLY saw "The Fighter" last night. Loved it. Great movie, and highly recommended.

Saw this the other day. Liked it a lot. Loved the tremendous amount of cartoon violence in it.

I found "The Plague" to be an interesting idea in Hobo With A Shotgun.

Not as good as Bring It On, but what is?  Still fairly amusing.
