He definitely plays great. He said that during soundchecks, he'd walk all over the stage and find the spots where his guitar would feed back the way he liked, then he'd mark those spots with tape. He's as good an example as anybody of a 60s guitarist who started out learning soul and blues riffs inside out, then hyped it up with high energy etc. He can definitely play the guitar.
