Hey at that point a lot of rural areas weren't even on the grid, and were running 18-40V DC from windmill powered generators. I found some of this out when I was researching the old suicide amp Sunn has. Google All American Five or just read http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/All_American_Five

Oh yeah, and if you're willing to go above 1W, the Epiphone Valve Jr. is pretty much a solid state rectified Fender Champ, the schematic is out there, the parts are out there, you can buy one as a starting point and just mod it all to hell.

a lot of shit can be learned by reading through ValveWizards shit

I have both his book, great for builders with some experience but please read his first Ch1, its available for free

Goes over basic operation of a Class A preamp stage, biasing, load lines. Perfect stuff whether you use a low voltage or high voltage setup.

Also plenty more on his site

this book is phenomenal. i get it, at least on the preamp stage circuit. what a wondeful way to end up at the input stage to a bassman. those response graphs definitely illustrate the whole deal best.
i totally see why there is miles of room for tweaks and special secret mini-components in different amp designs to slightly change the sound. a pile of variables within a set range makes for a boatload of combinations and variations.

let me ask. are some of these special amps like the matamp or green, with the warm sound:

?? those would use smaller anode resistor value up top and slightly "hotter" biasing?...resulting in a lower gain amp that  has more warmth, less headroom and more nice distortion starting sooner????
