Shitty speakers

So I have this homemade 2x12 cab that I loaded with some speakers I had laying around. It sounds like ass. First off the cab is built with 1/2" pine, and its pretty light weight. Would this be a factor? The other issue is the speakers are celestian g12s50's, which are not known to be all that good. So should I step up and get some good speakers or is it a lost cause with the cab build?

Is it small and sealed and thus sounds boxy with no low end? That's most likely, if you knock on the biggest side and its pretty loud and low, then the panel resonance will be scooping that bit out of the sound, but isn't usually a massive issue for small guitar cabs.

It's small and sealed, but sounds lifeless and has real muddy low end.

Open it, will sort that, means the speakers will break up easier if you crank bass, but it won't choke them.Cut a big hole in the back, or take the back off, depending how it is made.

It's a three piece back, so I can open it easy enough. I'll do that tomorrow and see if it improves.
