MD spent the night making a music video at a local barcade. It was super awesome and we even got a few of the bar patrons in on it.

We're going to do one more shoot in the practice space for some cut scene rocking out stuff and then we should be done.  What we did tonight looks pretty good and is pretty damn funny.

Been jamming with a bassist, guitarist, and cellist/guitarist. It's all been improv and for some guys who don't know each other that well, really really good. I plan to pick up a digital recorder today so we can start lifting pieces out of the improv and crafting the bones of songs. Then I hope to add more musicians.

Music is such a universal language. People who don't know anything about each other and may not even speak the same language can all still sit down and have a "conversation"

Can someone explain to me the protocol on fb response time. If you msg a band about playing a show, how long should you be expected to wait for an answer.

Couple of days.

Sometimes people are busy. Sometimes people are lazy.

Wait a few days and send a follow up message. If no response to that after a few more days, there's your answer.

If it's about a last minute slot you are trying to fill, contact other bands.

Wtf is wrong with a band responding and simply declining or accepting the invite. Maybe I'm old fashioned  but I feel like it's bullshit to ignore shit.

if you cant reach by phone, one thing you could do is put a response deadline in your invite

they might not have gotten the message or have their own internal deadlock so that they do not know how to respond, maybe they have a bunch of things to do on their docket

There's a venue id like Ocean of Stars to play. Booker does mostly FB messenger.

Repeated occasional messages over the course of many months. Not a single response. We've already played there.

Sometimes you just gotta take a hint and move on.


Edit: For the record I still like this club and have nothing against the booking agent. I get the sense he doesn't want to book us. Fair enough. I'll still go there and hang out, and there are plenty of other places to play.

If it's a key place to play in Austin, when you're there hanging out, bring it up in person; at least he'll be forced to give you a straight answer...

I get it, people are busy. I guess I can see where someone wouldn't have an extra 4.5 seconds in their busy day to type a yes or no response and hit send.

if they are busy and they know the answer is "no" then maybe there is a reason they dont respond.  maybe they got backlash on facebook or google reviews from a band in the past or something.

big label/physical media  days have evolved away

but if you think about it, this whole booking gigs at a venue method has been going on since rock started.

there is a better way. people just have to try stuff and figure it out.


my immediate suggestion is to talk to non-venue bar's and other public stores/facilities about playing there. assume they have zero sound system and be ready to show up with the whole deal.
but this means you could play a parking lot behind some local mom n pop place that will be slinging frappe's like they never have slung frappe's while a group of people is hanging out watching the band = win+win

I bet anyone could march up to city hall and level with them.:we want to play music and we would like to support this charity____, can we play in the town square gazebo?

the jackyl 40' flatbed trailer stage idea is huge and uber-portable.    maybe the ghetto version of that is like 3 landscape trailer rigs, whip in, the trailer doors fly open and all the shit is there to set up and go.

I keep getting the sense that everyone hates this system but begrudgingly suffers it, and mostly to a frustrating end because dildo's have too much control.

in better news, my buddy is stopping by so we can put together a couple concepts.

The Xanax Chimps noise/exp project will have its first band practice.  we plan on practicing mass consumption and obscene noise generation.
this guy can blow john pigman away(George Carlin reference RIP). he was a legend in highschool

Also, my buddy really REALLY wants a marching dumpster (big steel rolling percussion device).
I know frank zappa is smiling from the other side when we talk about thee marching dumpster

see, somehow everyone has to start thinking beyond this model of club venue.
I think it was sunno that commented they just play house parties and have a lot of fun, no bullshit. sounds heavenly.

that is one small way around the bigger problem. what if everyone had a dozen ways like that to elude the system? you probably could play out as aften as you like.

around here, there is a dude who has run open mic nites since the dawn of time. for a while he got himself set up in a little coffee shop which has a liquor license heh and a small kitchen. it sort of felt like being at a wedding at open mic, but those shop folks were full on a normally dead night and were loving life.

I bet there are lonely head shops that you could talk them into getting some beverages and snacks if they don't have that already and set up a little acoustic hippie corner

host your open mic nites.

I don't know what all... scope events and offer to play those free, i'm sure the possibilities are many if thought about.
every bar has a patio to smoke on...tell me they wouldn't let a band play their patio in the interest of attracting more attention to their bar.

pseudo-bandpractice was funny. I told my buddy mortay's golden rule of playing noise and he dropped his coffee laughing. (ok he had a whole armload of crap and was on the way out. he saved the drum )

We player a killer all ages show last week. The guitar player ended up moshing with the kids while taking solos. I was getting my "rock on" with some chick, who was closer to my age a few feet off of the stage. I think that she appreciated my hard rocking ways and beads of sweat.

We also finished up shooting our video last night. I felt like such an ass miming playing and singing.....but I guess that's how you have to do it.

thats cool you shot a video, good advertising!  miming, is that how everyone does it?  I figured everyone still got sound and was really singing, just they switch out the backing track. 


like you see a guitar solo and it looks note for note on the album so I figure he must be getting some sound to help him hit the same notes.
