This is a perfect time to work on your solo noise project.
to what end? If i cant 'play out' with it, im super uninspired to do anything. I know thats more on me than anything else.
I kept busy for awhile compiling the Tomsk-7 tracks for the discography cd but thats done now. I had it in my mind that things would be better by summer but that obviously will not be happening. Well like i said before at least this is happening at the tail end of my musical 'career'. I feel bad for all the people in their prime who had to put their bands on hold. You dont get that time back.

I'm taking this break from gigging to get better at recording.

Which poses its own new set of problems.

Have a Roland Studio Capture 16 channel interface.

Turns out they have an inherent flaw which causes them to pop and crackle from time to time while recording. Reading online many people have this issue. Most of the remedied it by getting something else.

So I'm looking at either:

1. (Recommended by a producer friend) A Focusrite Clarett 8prex 8 channel thunderbolt interface for $1200.

Not as many tracks I would like (I could add my Scarlett for 4 more if need be) but for the price it's the best currently out.

2. Go the cheap route and hope for the best: a lesser Focusrite 8 channel interface for $600. Then get another of the same unit for 16 channels total. Can at least split up the $1200.

I am really tired of buying shit. There are plugins to get rid of the pops and crackles but they also noticeably degrade the sound quality.

For current album project(s) tracking drums requires 9 tracks. If singer/guitarist and myself record live scratch tracks with him, that is 12 tracks.

Hopefully they'll finally cut those $2000 checks I keep hearing about and I can buy both #1 *and* a #2 as an expansion unit.

Don't know if this helps but I have a Soundcraft MTK 22 mixer interface all in one. USB connect from mixer right into your daw. I paid less than a thousand for it 5 years ago so they gotta be fairly cheap used.

I initially wanted a board interface, but the portability of the rack mount has proven it's worth. Since I don't have a dedicated studio area I have to go the players to record. Have converted my bass rack case into a mobile recording rig.

At first I bought a Presonus 16 channel board to use as an interface. My bandmate has the 24 channel version and I used it to record an album with them. So I'm already familiar with it.

But turns out, Presonus isn't updating the driver for the latest version of iOS, which is of course what I have.

While I was initially furious about this, I have since fallen in love with the board as a live mixing console for live streams.

Glorious overkill haha. Like building a sandcastle with a bulldozer.

Ok reading up on the issue with the Roland Studio Capture, I went and adjusted the audio buffering rate as that should in theory help.

The only problem is I'll have to do another tracking session and see if it still crackles or not.

Don't have much confidence it will remedy the issue, but I sure would like to save myself $1200.

I've been having a similar prob with recording through my iRigII onto my iphone.  Tried airplane mode.  Turning off blue tooth, turning off apps.  I think its just too hot signal.  I should just use my daw.  I'm old it's just like I want a tape reorder to just push record.

Whelp, the StudioCapture was still cracking last night.

Brought my little Focusrite 6i6 as well just in case, and wound up tracking with that instead so we could still work.

Seems tracking down a Focusrite Clarett 8prex will be a bit tricky, as Sweetwater/GC/Musicians Friend doesn't carry them. And the store on FocusRite's homepage is currently down. Because of course.

Looking at the Allen&Heath Qu-16.

16 channel board/interface. $1700 but I can use it as a recording console *and* as a live mixing board for livestreams. Can sell the Presonus board to help fund, tho I do like it.

A bandmate has the 24 channel version, which I will be learning anyway when that project and his other band start recording again.

Someone mentioned the board the other day in another thread somewhere for a good one. Hmmm. Let us know! edit are there discrete recording-outs (8+) or only 2 channels at a time? OLd cassettes had 4 channels! /just sayin'

Danny G

From what I understand this can be a 16 in/out USB interface, and can also be used as a L/R board mix via USB.

There are two USB slots, one for the flat end on the front and one for the other square end on the back.

Apparently you can also link the faders to the DAW so if you move a fader on the computer the fader on the board moves too

Whelp, never mind. New board may have to wait a bit.

My vehicle has been kinda hiccuping, and today the check engine light finally came on.

Getting an oil change tomorrow to see if that miraculously clears it up. From what it's doing it "feels" dirty fuel injector-ish, and I know a mobile mechanic who can check it out so not terribly concerned.

But if my suv is being weird maybe I shouldn't buy a $1700 board this week

Have you checked out the Soundcraft  MTK22. It's not 1700 and doesn't have auto faders but it is for recording and live sound. Built in interface.

Hrmmm....

I keep forgetting that right before I got the Presonus board I bought a Soundcraft board used off a guy for cheap. Got it home and realized its usb out was just L and R audio. He was VERY understanding and offered me a refund.

Hadn't thought about Soundcraft since but will look into that

Another thing I almost forgot about. When I got my SUV used last spring I opted for the $2200 Platinum + warranty. Just found the paperwork, calling them in the morning.

36 month/40,000 miles. I think my deductible is $100 \m/,

Cheap sensors almost always involve expensive labor.

Danny G

"Oh this sensor is kinda cheap and fragile. We better build the rest of the car around it to protect the sensor."

Well this is cool. Have two commission Big Muffs to build.

One friend wants one similar to the one I just built for myself, another wants an op amp Big Muff (which I've never built) with some tweaks.

Sweet!

okay I'm hankerin' to get my muff out. Back in a while with a pic. Its an odd one for sure.

Muffin Man

Special pedal #1 from G. Wyllie (Glen) RIP. I asked him one day about a cocked-wah and before I finished the question he said "oh you mean an umgawah". A what?

Here she is, ye olde #1. Proof that there are indeed unicorns.

RAGER

I'm not familiar with those pedals.

Muffin Man

The muff was from the builder's ca.1990's ebay listing. I don't know much about him other than being a muff modder. Just want to post a couple obscure pedals. Motivated to make some clips, been awhile since these have been in boxes. I've got a Wyllie fuzz pedal that's super ragged, thick toothed - he made a lot of fuzz variants. Cult like following I guess.

Muffin Man

Ranger, you were right about the Isla but I might get lucky if an email comes this week or next.

Lumpy

Did Wyllie make the etched pedals, kind of dome shaped maybe? They were beautiful.
