Title: the gig flyer thread
Post by: liquidsmoke on January 24, 2013, 03:02:31 AM
Did a search, couldn't fine one so..

Never made one before. Using Picasa and just putting simple text over a picture and everything looks too fuzzy blown up to actual size on the screen. Wondering what some better ways/programs are to use.

What do y'all do?

When I did hardcore punk shows I'd always go for the cut n paste style since my computer skills don't extend to the use of Photoshop or Illustrator. If I would do shows again or just make flyers, I'd probably go the same route.

I get lazy and do ripoff stuff sometimes, ala early 90s skateboard companies.

I was thinking about using a movie still.

Photoshop isn't free to my knowledge. Any freeware that is good for flyers?

Photobucket has a decent photo editor.

If you know how to use photoshop, Gimp is free. If you don't, big learning curve.

Also, OpenOffice has a Draw program that might be ok for flyer work. He'll, I've done them in Paintbrush.

I use gimp (open source program similar to photoshop) for photo editing and coloring drawings and use inkscape (open source program similar to illustrator) for text and other things that vector based graphics are better suited for.

If they're "e-flyers" (not printed) just make sure your background image looks good at the correct size. Are you working with your graphics small, then blowing up later? Your software should not be degrading your image, it's probably something you are doing, along the way.

Monitor resolution is typically 72 ppi (points per inch, aka dots per inch). A typical flyer might 800x600 (pixels, not inches) at 72dpi. Start with your background pic at the correct size. Don't use inches as a measurement if your flyer will never be printed. If printed, your flyer needs to start out as paper-size (inches) and 300 dpi (or 150 minimum, starts looking like crap below that). Then save a copy which is scaled down, for your e-flyer. You can't scale up without losing quality.

Try Gimp as mentioned. There should be tutorials on Youtube etc (adding text in Gimp, or whatever). I think it's only for PC though?

In addition, the big problem I have (when trying to make printed flyers) is finding high quality background images. A 72 dpi image that looks good on your monitor will look like crap if it's blown up four times its' size (72 into 300, or whatever). When hunting for images, only use huge JPG backgrounds if you plan on making prints. Dimensions in the thousands (of pixels).

I steal everything for flyers, I consider them disposable. This size is fine for an e-vite (or whatver they're called) IMO:

This is an awesome idea! I love that movie and it's soundtrack. Damn me for not being able to fly to see this show. I hope it's filmed or at least audio recorded.

Yup, this is my problem.

The flyer will be on Facebook as well as printed so it's got to look good. Mercian's second gig.

I'll fool around some more, check out Gimp, and also make sure I start with a giant picture to add text to. Not going to be using any band logos at least so that's one less headache.

Thanks everyone.

The pic is a random one from Google that I altered somewhat. The show will be in Madison, WI.

Nice pic, good job.

Try not to mix font styles unless you really have to (which is almost never) You have serif (Times?) and san serif (Helvetica?) in that flyer (Jesus wept). That's what they told me in Graphic Design 101. Exceptions can be made (band logos for example) or maybe mixing a fancy font for the fun info (ex: festival name) with a plain font for the practical info (date, time). It doesn't matter, it still looks cool and does what it's supposed to do. But try to stick with one font, whichever one you choose.

I had that thought but dismissed it considering that I don't know anything about graphic design, lol.

Next time. If I'm ever allowed to make a flyer again that is.

constructively speaking, That one might be hard to read from a few feet away, due to the blackness.  That being said, I'm no expert my self in getting a flyer to stand out.  Some dudes just have a knack for that stuff.

Lumpy's suggestion about fonts is enlightening.

A buddy of mine has made a little business out of flyers.  a couple of his designs:

Notice the font thing that Lumpy mentioned.  Looks like he took that same class.

My band is Rowsdower, which is a character from a Mystery Science Theater 3000 episode.  There's another local band named Manos, which also happens to be a character from a different episode.  The chances of two bands being comparable in sound, in the same region, and being named after obscure characters in retarded movies (psuedo-) popular for being made fun of led to the necessity that we play a show together.  I rarely draw shit but figured if I were going to put a lot of time into a flyer, this should be it.  It didn't turn out great in terms of a flyer, but the drawing was pretty cool I thought.  Drew it in pencil/charcoal and then colored it in photoshop.

My label is putting on its first event soon and I decided to make an effort at making a really cool flyer instead of settling.  It isn't finished yet but I really dig where it's going.

Haha, yeah. I had to update the original to include the venue (it's a house so its blacked out for keeping it on the DL on the internet). I figured since I put them 4 to a page to print anyway that I should have him fighting 4 different dudes.

I do. I dig it a lot, I use it in conjunction with Inkscape. My usual workflow is to draw on paper, scan. Import and trace in Inkscape (I like the line quality I get). Jump into gimp for coloring. Then back to inkscape for lettering. Its a little cumbersome but it works.

So I went to download Gimp and the site is confusing. I have no idea what to actually download. Native builds? Macports? Homebrew? Fink? What?

Looks like native builds is the basic package, already constructed into a useable interface. Macports seems like a way to build a more complex mix-n-match graphics program compiling Gimp and other freeware, with a custom interface. Maybe get the second native builds one (extra plug-ins!)

Upgraded my OS and now I can use Gimp. Trying to figure out how to cut out band logos without having to zoom in and go all the way around each curve of each letter. There must be an easy way to just copy logos when they are on a blank background so they can be inserted real neat and easy on top of artwork. Trying to set up a double sided insert for our CDR demo, artwork and logo on one side, track listing and info on the other. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ysr5upLeGf4

Use the magic wand tool. Click on the surround area, then find Invert Selection somewhere in your menu. (under "Selection"). If you need to add areas to your selection, hold down the Shift key while using the wand. To subtract areas, on Mac hold the "option" key which I think PC calls "alt".

Wouldn't be a bad idea to watch some Gimp tutorials on Youtube, or Google specific tasks +Gimp.

dunno 'bout gimp, but in phtoshop you can 'select color range' which usually grabs a logo without its background.

You might be able to choose "select similar" if you're trying to cut out a bunch of one color. Firstuse  the magic wand to beginy our selection. I don't know gimp but I use photoshop for a living

I'm back at this. Can't find any videos on how to cut out a pre-existing logo. I've tried using the magic wand and inverting the selection and it's just not really doing anything. I'll save it and it saves the logo unchanged. It will highlight the logo(which I have on a white background) but after that I don't know what to do. I will keep looking for videos on this but they all seem to be on how to make logos and how to trace around images to cut them. I suck at anything that involves having to figure anything out. I get stuck over and over and over.

I personally don't like band logos on flyers, anyway. They usually end up looking garbled and tacky – like many of those ornate (illegible) display fonts do.

Select it like you're doing, copy and paste into a new layer in your master document (create the new layer first).

If there's no Gimp tutorials, then look for Photoshop tutorials. The interface might look different (?) but the principles should be the same.

It sucks and I hate it (the learning curve). It's worth it though (Photoshop/Gimp)

Everything goes on it's own layer for flexibility (including the background). Blocks of text that hang together can be on the same layer (name of club, address, website) (doors open, show starts). You can still select the text and resize individual lines/words/letters individually, to make it look nicer, etc. Bigger text = more important, etc.

I'm old school from when people used to wheat-paste flyers on lamp posts etc. Xeroxes, pre-computer. I made a lot of punk rock flyers. I like flyers where you have a strong central image (flaming skull!) and you can see what it's about from 15 feet away (band logos!) Other people seem to like the band names to be more of a detail, with the graphic design being more important... more modern, I think.

Made some more progress tonight just messing around but I need to watch more tutorials to get a better understanding.

Am I wrong or is Gimp seriously lacking in weird and cool looking fonts?
Title: Re: the gig flyer thread
Post by: Lumpy on April 10, 2014, 06:25:36 AM
You have to load your own fonts into your system's font folder. Gimp should see them (you may have to relaunch Gimp, or restart your machine).

(Try these, some of the fonts are free, some want to be paid for commercial use, etc. I don't think you will get busted but no sense picking a font for a logo that somebody could get in trouble for later. For a one-time flyer, who cares. "We want to use this on our album!" nothing will probably happen but it's awkward.)

huge number of fonts in here, varying in quality http://www.dafont.com (http://www.dafont.com)

links to font sources http://typophile.com/node/44453? (http://typophile.com/node/44453?)

some metallish Old English and symbols in here: http://nihilum-fonts.tripod.com/nihilum.html (http://nihilum-fonts.tripod.com/nihilum.html)

metal fonts here: http://www.fontspace.com/category/heavy+metal (http://www.fontspace.com/category/heavy+metal)

Don't load up with hundreds of fonts you might never use, it can be a pain sorting through them later. Lots of typefaces are similar so if you don't see exactly what you want, keep looking (or chop letters up, draw on top of them etc). Dafont is cool because you can spell out the words you need, and display it in that font, before downloading.

The automatic kerning on free fonts can suck (the space between letters) so that's something else you'll need to learn how to do! (adjust the kerning on individual letters if the spacing looks awkward.)

Ah. And thank you. Nihilum has some really good ones.

I was messing around the other day trying to draw band logos as I'm okay at drawing letters.. until I try to make them look psychedelic or metal. Very hard but if I was to spend a few hours on each letter I might be able to make something okay looking happen. How you clean that up digitally I have no idea.

You could take your logo into Photoshop and add stuff, cut things away (selection tools/delete), clean up the edges (or warble them), add dirt ("distressed" look) etc. If you think it will help...

If you can hand-draw your logo, that is better than Photoshop. Anybody can use fonts, but hardly anybody can draw. If it looks too home-grown, polish it up in Gimp.

I actually paid someone to do it this time.  It was a wise choice.  Going to print up some high quality 11x17s and try to sell at the show.  What's left will be framed and hung on the wall by the band members.

I don't suppose anyone can help me out big time by designing a poster for our Horse Latitudes/Ommadon/Coltsblood show in July? We usually do them ourselves but we're insanely snowed under trying to record and prepare a split tape and in the middle of selling our flat and moving to a house. I can offer in return eternal thanks and a copy of our CD x

Nice looking flyers, but why the psuedo-satanic theme? Does that make the music more metal or whatever? Those cliches are a little stale, but the squirrels do lighten it up a bit.

yeah, I did mean make it silly, I think that was his point, but to me upsidedown crosses and pentagrams somehow implying evil or darkness/whatever is more laughable. At least the squirrels aren't stale imagery.

Outdated christian fears do not scare me. They make me (and my kids) laugh. nice looking design, though, no doubt.

OF COURSE it makes the music more metal.

Those flyers are not meant to be funny. Those are meant to strike fear into the heart of Christians. You won't be laughing so hard when The Great Satan is summoned via the power of heavy metal and destroys all that do not kneel before him.*

*Squirrels will get a pass, though. Since they're cute and do people things with their hands.

Did you make that? Was it scanned (or photographed)? I dig the old-school paste-up style.  Back in the day, I would hella bummed if any of my paste-up edges showed. Now the bug has become a feature. Low tech!

I didn't make that, a friend did. Old school cut and paste. He scanned it and sent it to me via fb.
