where you can just roll the volume knob to split the coils?

not sure....i guess it started on the peavey t-60's.....

Rolling the tone gives you a single. I have a t-60. I use it, I love it.

Yeah... my understanding was that you wire it to a tone knob.  If you do it to a LP, you can make one tone a master tone, and use the other as a spin a split.  Full up is regular humbucker, anything under is a varying balance of the two coils, all the way down to split.  Or so I understand... I don't have it on any of my guitars.
