Evanston got 5 new restaurants this fall - a fancy one, a local food and brew place, a Mexican tortas shop, an authentic Chinese place from Chinatown and the woman that sells empanadas at the farmers market is opening a storefront place on Noyes  by Northwestern and an EL stop - go American dream

You may be familiar with Tania Merlos-Ruiz's empanadas from the Evanston Farmers Market, where her fresh, creative fillings are a hit with customers.

The pipian empanada, for example, is based on a family recipe from Guatamela, and combines pumpkin seeds, sesame seeds and mustard greens, while the cochinita pibil is made from slow-roasted pork marinated in fresh orange juice, fresh lime juice, achiote and oregano.

"This is our first year doing this, and people have liked them very much," says Merlos-Ruiz, who also sells empanadas at the Glenwood Farmers Market and the Low-Line Market in Lake View.

Fans of Merlos-Ruiz's cooking are in luck, since she and her family are opening a bricks and mortar location in Evanston this October, at 914 ½ Noyes St. Called Tomate Fresh Kitchen, the new restaurant will serve carryout and delivery for lunch through dinner.

They did so well that they ran out of food.

I so happy for them. We got their food delivered to work for lunch this week and you could tell they just opened, the driver got lost and the food was cold.  You could still tell it was really good.

Yeah! This is close by.

This fall all the Chicago chefs in River North opened branches up here in Evanston - there's like 12 new innovative/hip/unique/moms cooking/ethnic type restaurants we haven't been in yet.  They're all doing smashing business so our downtown is booming.

Pittsburgh is experiencing a hipster eatery boom lately as evidenced by the bizarre foods episode here last week.  If only I had an interest in eating a raw goats heart.

We put French fries on things too.

goat's heart, sliced thin and cooked on a skewer over coals, though? fuck yes.

last weekend, in the area for a funeral, we went to 'the fort' in morrison, co. focuses on game meats and 'pioneer' food. had quail eggs wrapped in bison sausage for appetizer, followed by their 'game plate' - an elk chop, some bison steak, and a teryaki quail. meat!
let's dispense the unpleasantries

I definitely would try it but not seek it out.
