World's End is fucking great.  I was impressed by how dark it went with the riff on dude's refusal to grow up and inveterate alcoholism.

Last Days Here

Doco Bobby Liebling of Pentagram. Had heard of them and a few tunes but knew nothing really about them or him.

Wow. Awful, moving, entertaining, informative. Def a "what not to do" kind of movie, and all musicians know and/or have worked with people like that. I was fighting tears at the end. You despise what a fuck up he was/is but you still want him to be happy and still root for him.

Recommended.

American Hustle

I liked it but not as much as I thought I would like it but it still wasn't a letdown so I dunno. Maybe need to re-see it.

Edgar Wright is making some of the best flicks around, these days.  In my opinion, of course.

Also, Wolf of Wall Street was fucking great.  It was totally Goodfellas on Wall Street, and I didn't give one single shit.

It was great. Total drug movie with lots of laughs. Tons of tit & ass, sleazy wall street scumbags. The three hours went by quick. It did have a pretty cliche Martin Scorsese ending/wrap-up, but thats his deal.

It was enjoyable but a little too much of a Goodfellas retread to me with the voiceovers and freezeframes and coke snorts becoming zoom-ins, etc.  I actually thought it could've used more laughs.  But the scene of Leo vs. the FBI agent on the boat was great as was the "drugs finally hit him at the country club" scene.

Yeah, Scorsese did his thing and obviously had final cut. Could have done with one or two less trading room speeches but otherwise the three hours were very enjoyable. DiCaprio was cool as a charming scumbag.

So I re-saw American Hustle and managed to see Wolf of Wall Street as well (searching for work hence the free time). I liked Wolf of Wall Street, the movie just cruises by but the ending was very Scorcese (as was the ending in American Hustle). For some reason I liked American Hustle more overall. I definitely laughed more with Wolf of Wall Street (it is a drugs movie after all) but I thought the performances all around were better in American Hustle.

Anywhoo, 2 new great movies.

I rewatched this last night. I forgot all the little subtle hints and symbolism they drop in it.

Ray Liotta is terrifying in this film because I am not sure what he was capable of.

Atlantic gave him the "The Ray Liotta Award for Best Portrayal of a Creepy, Corrupt Cop: Ray Liotta, The Place Beyond the Pines"

Her & Inside Llewyn Davis.  Both good, if somewhat overrated.

I walked out of Her feeling like I'd just watched a harrowing portrait of technologically enabled alienation and loneliness, whereas my lady thought it was a sweet romance.

This was a very interesting documentary. It dealt with honeybee colonies in California, Switzerland, China and Australia, and how the honeybee population is slowly declining. Great cinematography in this film, and the close-ups of the bees was cool but it also gave me nightmares.

Watched this last night.  Thoroughly enjoyed it.  The Burnese German language was really cool to hear spoken.  The contrast between the Swiss and the money grubbing American dipshit in his Hawaiian shirt and his semi trucks was appalling.  This guy just takes the beauty of the process and crushes it literally.  And the fact that the argument whether humans or bees are the better pollinators is only relevant in China because they have no bees.  Very interesting.  Also didn't know that honey bees are not indigenous to North America.

Inception - it's fast paced, it takes off from the very beginning and never lets up. Unfortunately it's also full of Matrix #2/3 style nonsense ("he's gonna die in his dream, but he's 3 layers deep!" blah blah blah). Eventually, it's so full of metaphysical bullshit that I'm not exactly sure WTF is happening, so it's hard to feel like you're invested in the action. Plus a lot of stupid nonstop fighting and shooting guns (in a dream). And visual effects I mostly didn't care about (fighting while they float in mid-air, buildings collapsing, etc). It's just tiresome after a while, and it's 2.5 hours long. It's not that I didn't understand the plot twists, more like I didn't care. On the plus side, it doesn't over-explain too much (a little bit) it just expects you to hop on for the ride. It just wasn't a ride I enjoyed very much. C+

Oh yeah, Ellen Page is in it, she's easy to look at, and she can act. She looks like she's 17 in this (she's 26). Now I'm interested to see Juno and her other movies. And her boobies, if possible.

Awesome. Great acting, great writing, great b/w-cinematography. Its cool to see former movie-tough-guys like Stacy Keach and Bruce Dern as mumbling old geezers. But as great as they are its June Squibb that steals the show.

Care to elaborate? I haven't seen it since it came out and didn't really put forth any analysis while viewing the first time.
